Kershaw Blur Opening Unexpectedly

I just purchased a Kershaw Blur for EDC about two months ago. I was just sitting on the couch with it clipped in my front shorts pocket blade up and it somehow managed to open itself. This is like the third time that has happened. The predecessor Gerber that I carried for two years prior never did that once. Is this a known problem? Anything I can do to fix it? I don't think I am doing anything weird to cause it to happen. I am not carrying it at all now as I have a 15 month old that likes to jump on me and I'm taking no chances with him. I didn't even notice this time until I got up off the couch and walked twenty feet into the kitchen.

Thanks for your thoughts. I really enjoy this forum although I haven't ever posted.

Yikes! I used to have a Blur but it wasn't working out for me so I got rid of it. It never opened on it's own before though. I've heard of some Blur owners opting to remove the torsion bar... maybe an option for you?

Good luck! :)

I think I would either remove the torsion bars or simply change to a non assisted folder. You might send it to kershaw to be adjusted also, it shouldnt open on its own.

Send back to Kershaw ASAP.

Man, I hope my Blur doesn't start doing that. First I've heard of it though...

Shoulda got a Spyderco

Look how helpful you are.

Adjusting the pivot is a good place to start as others have suggested. Tighten down until the AO doesn't work then start loosening it in very small increments until you're happy with it.

Your Blur shouldn't be opening up without pressure being applied to the thumb studs. Try what morrowj says. If that doesn't work contact Kershaw customer service and let them take care of it.

I disagree with your best "advise". Firstly, it's spelled with a c, not an s. But thus far in my experience, Kershaw produces some of the best high-value knives around. I own or have gifted 12 or so of them, and all have performed flawlessly. Yet another plus for the brand, of the many I've purchased, Kershaw consistently has the sharpest and most evenly ground blades straight from the box. Not everyone possesses the funds to buy the higher end brands, so in my opinion, which this post only is opinion, Kershaw is a great choice for EDC.

Like it or not, I gave the best advise on this thread. If you buy, bargain basement AO like Kershaw expect problems...

You're not giving advice, you're trolling. The OP asked for specific advice about a specific knife....wise up.

That definitely isn't normal bahaviour for the Kershaw Blur. I carried mine for 2 years as an EDC and haven't had it come open. In fact it's in my pocket right now. As others have suggested tighten up the pivot screw a little bit with a T8 torq driver. I takes quite a bit of pressure to open normally.

I have carried my Blur for close to 7 years. It is a knife that is hard to beat for the price. I have dropped mine and it popped open a couple of times, Never opened in my pocket. Get the right sized Torq bit (Kershaw T- tool) and tighten down the big headed screw the blade swings on, tinker with it a little and tune it up. I had excellent service with Kershaw when the torsion bar in my Blur broke.

I've seen several with weak detents, including an S30V model I'm holding as we speak.

My choice is either to tighten the pivot screw so tight that the blade is difficult to open or to let the knife fall open when it wants.

You should send it in -- and I should do the same.

Sometimes folders open all by themselves, even if they do not have AO. I think it makes sense to change the place or the way of carrying the knife. It could be the shape - quite strange really.

I would hardly call the Blur a bargain basement knife.
