Kershaw Blur Opening Unexpectedly

Do you think the thumb stud got caught on something in your pocket? It is an unusual design (staircase angle). I have a plain edge Kershaw Blur and haven't had that happen to me, but I don't carry it too often either.

I just purchased a Kershaw Blur for EDC about two months ago. I was just sitting on the couch with it clipped in my front shorts pocket blade up and it somehow managed to open itself. This is like the third time that has happened. The predecessor Gerber that I carried for two years prior never did that once. Is this a known problem? Anything I can do to fix it? I don't think I am doing anything weird to cause it to happen. I am not carrying it at all now as I have a 15 month old that likes to jump on me and I'm taking no chances with him. I didn't even notice this time until I got up off the couch and walked twenty feet into the kitchen.

Thanks for your thoughts. I really enjoy this forum although I haven't ever posted.

I disagree with your best "advise". Firstly, it's spelled with a c, not an s. But thus far in my experience, Kershaw produces some of the best high-value knives around. I own or have gifted 12 or so of them, and all have performed flawlessly. Yet another plus for the brand, of the many I've purchased, Kershaw consistently has the sharpest and most evenly ground blades straight from the box. Not everyone possesses the funds to buy the higher end brands, so in my opinion, which this post only is opinion, Kershaw is a great choice for EDC.

It must be nice to live in a typo free world. I am not sure I would call a an Endura "higher end" knife, you can get them for about $55 shipped...

Like it or not, I gave the best advise on this thread. If you buy, bargain basement AO like Kershaw expect problems...

Kershaw Blur is hardly your typical bargain basement folder.

I suggest sending it in for service if adjusting the pivot doesn't work. None of my 3 Blurs have a weak detent and I would hate to read a "I cut myself" thread from you in the future. :) Get it fixed.

Regarding the Blur:

Send an email to warrantyinfo@kai-usa.com and explain the problem to them. They'll be able to fix it right away for you if tightening the pivot some doesn't fix the issue.

Quit smoking your stuff - it makes you silly. :thumbdn:

This would happen if he was carrying the knife tip up. Perhaps the OP could elaborate on how the knife is opening / how it's oriented in the pocket.

Is that what you meant?
That's the first thing I would do is move the clip to tip up, it can't open in your pocket. If you are carrying in your right front pocket, that is. Then tighten the pivot some.

+1 on the troll statement.

i'd like to know was the knife being carried loose in the pocket with any other objects. I could see something happening when sitting if the studs caught a key ring or whatever. Otherwise, sometimes drawing the knife from the clipped position will catch the stud on mine causing the knife to open a wee bit. I'm always aware of it though and catch it. FYI, my torsion bar is removed and I like it. The knife has a reasonably strong detent contrary to what people believe about Kershaw AO's with the spring removed. As for it being low end, well that's just crazy talk. Mine has the s60v blade, it's my favorite edc.

Forget the smokingmonkey. If you can't get your Blur to your satisfaction, Kershaw will. I have several Kershaws, and have found the one time I needed customer service to a great experience. Search around this site a bit and you will find plenty of strong supporters for their products and their customer service.

Regardless of "tip up" or "tip down", the knife shouldn't open by itself or when carried in any pocket. Personally, I carry all my AOs tip up if at all possible with the blade side to the pant seam, spine to the front, with the clip holding it snug. My Blur has never opened in that position, nor have any of my other AOs, and it gets carried all day in EDC rotation in my construction work.

Hopefully it is just a small adjustment and you are on your way.

If i was you id take it apart and see why its doing that. the torsion bar may not be closing fully. the blade may not be closing fully. my blur has never had this problem. kershaw has excellent customer service, they will fix your knife for free if you send it to them.
