Kershaw Blur

I have a few more, but they weren't here on picture day. :D

Very good weight, various blades steels and types, cool handle colors.
Yeah, I like the Blur.

i just got a second one, red with plain blade, in addition to my tanto blur. gonna swap the blades, make me a red tanto.

and just a note, the OCC one has no inserts...

The Blur is fantastic. It has become my number one EDC. So far I've got the old Red model, an all Black tanto, a Blue handle, two SG2 models (one reground to take the recurve out), and the S60V Blem model. I carry the S60V model constantly. To me they are the perfect EDC. Light, strong, great blade size and shape, great grip, and they can be carried tip up or tip down. Tip up for me please! Now I need me an S30V model... And lord oh lord I hope they make an S110V model.

Here is my EDC rotation from ~1 yr ago. The Blur had seen ~4+ yr carry at the time, as had the Scallion. The Spydie Native was ~8 months old and gets a lot of carry these days, the Dam Leek less - and only a few carries - mostly on Sundays! The Kershaws had been dinged in my pocket - and showed it. The Blur's inserts initially fuzzed up my pants, thankfully no more as their sandpaper texture faded over the years. I have a little-used black on black Blur of the same vintage - both dated Aug 03 - and now an S30V Blur 'won' last fall - dated 'Oct 08' - and stone-washed blade/black handle. That one has duller, more-subdued 'grippy' inserts. That red Blur has opened many a blister-pack! Thankfully, it is easily re-edged with the Spydie 'Sharpmaker', as was the S30V Native, although it took a lot longer.

The red Blur was EDC-ed a little more over the last year. It doesn't look much worse - just sharper - I like that 'Sharpmaker'!

I'm not much into knives made with company Logo's on them other than the knife maker. To me it looks cheap because it reminds me of speciality knives hardware stores make to get their name out. Like a beater knife.

Doesn't every production knife manufacturer logo their knives??

I left that out lol, i meant to type it in but i was running around doing other things. I don't mind the manufacturer, just if its like OCC or a secondary company not original to the knife.

Nevermind, i did.

I don't mind Snap-On or other names on a knife. OCC is a different story altogether. I'd never buy anything that is sponsored by Orange County Choppers. As a proud Union member I could never bring myself to support anyhting OCC. It's sad because I love my Kershaws, but hate that they are in kahootz with OCC. No offense to Thomas, Kershaw, or KAI.

I really don't want to get off the original topic, but when you say you wouldn't
buy anything OCC because you're a Union member.
What does that mean? Did they do something against the Union or something?

mike

I'd like to know too. I happen to be a big fan of OCC.

the way i look at it, Kershaw put the SnapOn name on their knives so Snapon can sell it off the truck for them. however, OCC probably designed the look of their knives for Kershaw, so OCC gets to put their name on those... It's not like XXX hardware took some knives and slapped on a sticker and called it their's and sells it for dirt amount cheaper.

so... when do we get to see a Kershaw bike?

If you guys want to know I'll tell you. I live near Orange County Choppers. I'm a member of the IBEW Local 363. If you watched the show from the beginning you know that Vinny (the guy that used to do all the wiring in the bikes) was a Union electrician as well, but got the opportunitly to work with the Tuttles and took it. In one of the early shows they made a Union bike dedicated to the Plumber's Union. I loved the show and thought these guys were great.

Fast forward to a few years later and OCC mania has blown up and the Tuttles are known pretty much world wide. The original OCC shop isn't big enough anymore and they need to build a new one. They also want to open a couple of stores to sell merchandise. So with all the jazz about how they're pro Union everyone thinks the new shop and stores are a shoe in for the local Unions. WRONG! They build a huge new shop and warehouse and their local srotes using non Union labor. Infact, they hire all non union contractors. Not only that, they won't even listen to Union contracters bids. Vinny gets sour about this and notice that he is no longer on the show.

It hurt all the local Unions big time. I know in mine alone there were many fans of the show and of the Tuttles work. A few guys even owned bikes. All that changed and the name OCC is pretty much spat upon around here now. I've talked and worked with a few guys who knew the Tuttles and they basically told me that the fame got to their heads and they became "Hollywood" in a sense. Thinking they're better than most.

What bothered me most of all was the "fake" factor of the Tuttles. These guys seemed so down to earth and like great guys who were just like the everyman, but in reality it's all just some image. So when it comes to anything brandished OCC I'd rather relieve myself on it than use it or wear it.

But that's just me...

Tony, I remember you bringing this up earlier, when the OCC knives were released. I understand your problems vis-a-vis the non-union thing. But I don't see the need to drag Kershaw into this union/non-union thing.

Just my opinion.

I'm not dragging Kershaw into this at all. In that first post I even say that I love all my Kershaw knives and that I mean no offense towards Thomas, Kershaw, or KAI. I'm not out there bashing Kershaw in the slightest. If that were the case I wouldn't purchase any of their products. It's the exact opposite. I buy a new Kershaw nearly every week. Their simple liner lock w/ Al and kraton handle was my first purchased knife when I was 15. I give Leeks as Christmas and Birthday presents every year.

My real problem is with OCC. In the post above when I'm explaining the bad taste in my mouth for OCC I do not mention Kershaw once in the post. I have brought this up once before and only once. I was new to the forums and it was right around the time when all this happened around here. Since then I've never brought it up again. The problem is I don't think alot of people know about OCC and support their name because they watch the show and think the same way I used to.

The real kick in the pants is that I really like the designs on both the OCC Blur and the OCC Leek. I've fought with the idea of buying one of each, but thinking about how much food they took off the table of my brothers and sisters I just can't do it. I support Kershaw. In my opinion they offer the best knives on the market for the prices and their customer service and sales reps are simply the best in the business. I just won't ever buy anything stamped OCC and I don't think there's anything wrong with spreading a little knowledge and truth.

Again, I'd like to say for the record that I will never stop supporting Kershaw. Perhaps I brought this up in the wrong forum. Infact, I know I did, but it was a spur of the moment thing and a couple of guys wanted me to elaborate. Trust me I don't feel like waking up on a dock with my feet in some concrete shoes and staring up at the faces of the Kershaw Mafia. That doesn't sound like any kind of happy ending to me.

Tony8179, thanks for your explanation of your distaste for OCC. Something I did not know.
I've viewed your posts before and I can plainly see you are a supporter of Kershaw.

We're out of duct tape and the trunk of the Donmobile is full at the moment, so you're safe. :D

Tony, everything is good! There are a lot of products made I have problems with for one reason or another. I was hoping to stop a potential thread train wreck, but after reading your reply, I see I was mistaken in the way I read your first post. For this I humbly apologize.

It's all good with me.

Thank God. Maybe I can actually close my eyes and get some sleep tonight. ;) The fear.... I mean the insomnia kept me awake last night. :D
