They use some kind of clear coat or clear enamel so it doesn't change much afterwords. You can do this kind of stuff pretty easily with house hold items.

I totally love copper. Will be picking up the Cu Natrix at some point. For me, it's the starting all shiny, then the slow morphing process. Then when it gets so dark that the change slows down, I strip and start over. To clean, I usually use silver cleaner that we get from the jewelry counter at Wally's. Eats the patina off in approximately 1 second (give or take 1/100 second). Followed by a quick buff.

To slow down a little, as others have mentioned, add a quick wipe down with something containing wax.
