Kershaw: crappy screws?

They all use Loctite, even the Leek. Sounds like the OP had poor Torx tools or tool technique, fwiw. I have only stripped Kershaw heads when being sloppy. And Ive disassembled and reassembled Kershaw knives (dozens of models) at least 200 times.

How do you avoid being sloppy? I didn't give it too much thought the first time and it worked fine, second time it wouldn't budge, third time it would, fourth time it wouldn't, fifth time it would, sixth time it wouldn't. That's half and half, one off, one on like clockwork but I wasn't doing anything differently.

Not quite sure how literally he meant being sloppy, but keeping your tools clean, as well as the inside of the screws can make all the difference, especially when there's such little depth to the head, as is the case with the tiny body screws on Kershaws.

Sounds like a Locktite issue to me.
I had my Shallot send in, it returned with locktite on the clip screws.

The knife still lies disassembled on my desk after a year, screws are stripped, clip is still on.
Won't be buying a Kershaw again; I HATE Locktite.

Bought two Sanremnu's a black and a Silver one, and planned to swap the screws and the clip. Guess what? Locktite.

That may have been it. I wasn't sure if the stuff coming out was grit or metal shavings, although at the same time I got my Zing less than a month ago (Mar 09 manufacture date however, and it was the display model, so it might have collected some grit too).

Get yourself a LARGE set of torx drivers from like Wiha or something over at Sears. Kershaw's is meant as a pocket/traveling tool--they use a different brand when assembling knives because they have much more control over the screws.

Most screws are loctited at the Kershaw factory.

The screws are not crappy. If you don't push in all of the way with the kershaw pocket tool and use even force, then you will mess up the screw heads.

Anything else? There's make sure it's clean, try wiggling a bit to see that it's gripping first, push all the way in...

Verify the size as well. An oversized bit, spinning in the middle the screw will shave off the inner points of the star, and when you go to use the correct size, it won't work.

I hate small screws on knives :grumpy:

Anything smaller than a T6 is a PITA. Not because I'm worried they won't be strong enough, but because of how easy they strip.

well im not alone i encounterd the same problem. its not the ..screws.. its the t- tool. get a great kneck t set at pep boys and problem solved.kershaw will send you new screws free

joey

I've never had a problem with kershaw screws...I can't say I've ever noticed any faults with them at all. As for your inability to take the screws out, that would probably the magic of loctite at work, as others have said.
