Kershaw JYD I air force markings

I picked up a Kershaw JYD I at an incredibly low price, so I got in spite of the air force decals on it. While I'm sure they'd appeal to someone, i dunno, in the military, I'm not really the military type so it seems a bit strange. Does anyone have experience removing these? Can it be done? I'm spending some time pimping this sucker out (polishing screw heads, sanding washers, etc.) and wanted to try and remove the logos but don't want to mess the knife up... any advice would be very welcome!

i don't know how they are applied, but i would guess that they are etched. depending on how deep the marks are you can sand them off with some wet/dry sandpaper, which will give it a nice satin finish.

if the marks are very deep, you might stuck with them or else risk weakening the scale alot by removing alot of metal. this isn't likely though.

what grit sandpaper would you recommend? I'm afraid I don't know a whole lot about sanding, but I'd really like to take those suckers off.

i would say probably start with 400. from there you can tell if that's all you need or if you will need coarser grit to get deep enough.

sanding is pretty simple when it comes to a project like this, just rub it back and forth under your finger pads or use a rubber sanding block. i would suggest trying to keep the scratch lines from the paper parallel to the handle.

Is it possible Kershaw has a replacement scale for sale for that knife? Or I wonder if it would be worth the time to see if someone would want to trade scales?

considering I paid $11 for the knife, i'm more interested in trying my hand at modifications with this knife.

So far i've spent quite a bit of time wet-sanding with 400 grit on a rubber sanding block. I've gotten down through probably 80% of the etching so it's only visible at certain light angles. I haven't started with the 1500 grit yet.

I've been using a circular buffing motion... is this a no-no?

and what should I finish the surface with after 1500 grit wet?

thanks in advance - James

How about some pics of the progress? I'm going to mod my JYD & JYDII once I get settled in to my new place. I've already modded the shape of the handles, and pocket clip on the JYD, but I have plans to rid the knife of the "Aircraft " look, as well.

Almost forgot...

Visit the Kershaw Forum, as lots of folks post Kershaw Modifications there.

Circular buffing a no no? Yeah, unless that's what you want. I'll let the cat out of the bag, Im thinking of an egnine turned finish on my JYD. I think it will look cool and unique.

ok, here we go guys:

I don't know.
Looks like you took the junk yard out of the dog :)

Great job! Very classy looking.
How long did all that take?

Doc

hmm, it probably took about 4 or 5 hours. But to be honest, I work very slowly and enjoy this sort of thing... i was in no hurry!

I love polishing things when you need time to think. It gets you into a certain concentration zen. At least it does for me.

When I first saw this thread, sparky, I was going to suggest that you get the handle pieces beadblasted. But the polished handles look terrific -- nice work!

DoW - Thank you! I am quite happy with how it turned out.

Next question: should I do this to my shallot? It IS a first production though... perhaps not.
