Kershaw JYD II (56K warning)

HOLY CRAP!!! Where'd you get the electron microscope?! I think I see quarks!

The only problem D-2 usually had was that it would form huge carbides, so big that if you sharpened it too thin the edge would just fall apart (in a microscopic sense). With CPM D-2, you have the carbide size determined by the CPM process, keeping everything nice and small. Not only does this mean that the steel will now take a thin, highly polished edge, but it can get even harder and tougher that it would otherwise.
I have heard that with D2 though it's strong and hard it's more likely to crack then dent if pushed too far. Is there any merit to this at all, and if there is does the same thing happen to the CPM?
Also does anyone know how great the difference in performance is between JYD composite and the regular model?

I'm pretty sure a more refined grain structure would give greater toughness, though anything will be brittle if it's run too hard. Luckily I can say that Kershaw does a good job. I've done a bit of hard work with my JYD II and when pushed too hard the edge rolls and dents almost all the time.
As far as edge holding goes, my experience with high alloy steel compared to low alloy steel is that while nothing keeps a razor edge for very long, high alloy stuff will keep a working edge for an amazing amount of time.
While D-2 isn't super high alloy, it is significantly more that 13C26, and edge holding should be appropriately higher (that said, if you tend to dent and roll your edge more than anything, a lower alloy steel can be advantageous for ease of sharpening and extra toughness).

Ohh, here's the picks of a mod I did recently...

I like the mod you made to that. I have a couple of questions about it if you don't mind. 1. How did you do it and was it difficult? 2. Is it done so you can put your finger in front of the guard to choke up on the blade? I just got one of these knives Saturday and really like it. You have some awesome pictures of it by the way.
