Kershaw - Ken Onion Leek

Don't get me wrong, I like Kershaw.
TFin, I really question this statement. You have mentioned nothing but negative concerning Kershaw in this thread, and other threads as well. I guess I have missed the part(s) you like about us. Have we upset you in some way in the past? If so, what can we do to rectify the situation?

You have mentioned in another thread that Kershaw and our AO are nothing but a fad. If you think AO is a fad, it's a fad that has lasted 8 long years, and has been adopted by many other manufacturer's over the last few years, incuding BM. We sell more AO's today than we ever have, so the fad seems very strong to me. Now I have seen a lot of knife related fads over the decades, but most don't last very long, let alone 8 years.

No one can convince you to love Kershaw Knives let alone like them. You have a brand preference, which is great, I'm confused why you're continuing to go on in a not so positive way about our blades, locks, and advertising in a thread that was started by a person that loves the Leek? What's your point here?

The G-10 Leeks are in fact liner locks, and all are S30V.

Hopefully we will have a knife that fits perfectly in your pocket in the future, until then we will just keep trying.

Is the G10 version a framelock?

No, but the SS one is, as is the Rainbow and Black Boron ones.

The S30V is even more brittle than the original steel used (440A)? I can only imagine more problems coming from that.

I have several knives with S30V blade-steel (Spyderco Native, Cabelas Buck 110, Microtech UMS, Chinook II) and I have experienced no problems with brittleness.

The leek is advertised as a "gents" knife, yet it has the assisted opening feature. Generally a "gents" knife is used in offices where sheeple are everywhere. I wouldn't exactly say assisted opening is practical for a gents knife setting. Seems like Kershaw is contradicting themselves in the marketing of the exact same knife.

Well, gentlemen are found in many places, not just in offices.
Impress the fellows with your G-10 Leek while on the golf course.
Slice a lime, for the cocktails, with your rainbow leek while entertaining friends on the boat.
Use your SS Leek to check your steaks while "grilling out" on the back-deck.
Or trim your cigar with a black boron Leek at the table on "poker night".

My wife carries hers at her office and everbody thinks the Rainbow pattern is simple beautiful--the assisted opening is a bit of a shocker, but looked upon as "cool" more than menacing.
I've carried the Rainbow version at the hospital where I work and have had no negative remarks made.

Still, it's not for everyone, and if you don't like them there are plenty of other knives to choose from.
You don't need to justify your choices to us.

If I lived or went to dinner in the neighborhood you are alluding to, I'd make sure I was well armed.

One thing that I would like to mention is that on the upcoming ZDP-189 Leeks is that they will most likely be flat ground. That will add more mass to the tip of the blade and make them a bit stronger. I still would not use them for pry bars though... The S30V Leeks might be switched over to a flat grind as well.

Kershaw Knives R&D

I Would Like To See The Back Of The Handle Filled In More . So The Tip Is Covered When Closed. When In Pocket Keys Slide In And Hit The Sharp Side Of The Tip.

I dont know if strenghtening the tip on the ZDP is neccesary but in terms of the S30V blade, I would leave it as is, it's perfect. Tip breakage is not really an issue with the current design (unless people use it as an assisted opening prybar ;) )

Thomas, will the new Leek Ti/ZDP version have a frame lock? I guess that I am always on the side of frame locks in the frame vs. liner discussion but to each his own. Thanks.

I use the tip of my S30V all the time, and appreciate the cutting edge geometry of the hollow grind. It's dead easy to sharpen, and improves "sliceability" when using the full edge. I personally wouldn't change a thing on the S30V-G10!

No, you haven't upset me. Kershaw was the first brand of "real" knives I purchased. I started with a Chive and moved on to a Leek. I carried Kershaw exclusively for over a year and a half. As I mentioned before, I broke 2 leek blades and you guys replaced them for me, your customer service is top notch.

You have mentioned in another thread that Kershaw and our AO are nothing but a fad. I don't doubt that they sell well (I bought two of them). I just think AO knives will phase out. I may be right, I may be wrong. I think the more popular they get the more police agencies will crack down on them. I'm a 20 year old kid, having a 3 inch "automatic" (as a lot of the outside world sees an AO knife) knife on me is NOT good should a police officer start asking questions.

I don't have a brand preference. If you looked at my knife collection you'd see Kershaw, CRKT, Buck, Benchmade, Spyderco, as well as others. I am not "advertising" anything. I simply stated my opinion, I thought that's what forums are for?

I understand you have a personal attatchment to this subject, and with having good business sense (which you seem to have), I think you should consider ALL remarks made about your knives, good or bad. I'm a businessman myself, and while constructive critism is hard to take sometimes, it can be a life saver at the same time.

The liner lock is the main thing I don't like about your leek. The Leek is the only liner I own that fails the "white knuckle" test. That puts it out of my EDC rotation automatically.

I know what it's like trying to sell a product in this economy, and I applaud your efforts in interacting with your more educated customer base in trying to better your products. I'm not trying to attack you guys, just stating my honest opinion.

My reqest for a knife from you guys would be a 3" blade with a thicker tip, a "flipper" on the blade such as the CRKT M16. Make a full framelock or something similar to the BM Axis, Spyderco Ball Bearing or the SOG lock (I dont know what Sog calls that lock). If you could do a knife like that with a low ride clip I would buy it in a heartbeat.

jvan, thanks very much for the kind words. Look for the Ti/ZDP Leek in June.

 Can u tell us how much the retail price on that? I wanna know how much I am gonna have to put aside till june.

Why dosn't Kershaw offer the Leek in 1095 or 01..? I think they would sell like Hotcakes..!

The Leek Is A Great Knife. I Like The Blade The Way It Is. If Lost I Will Buy Another. Just Dont Like Access To Blade Edge In Pocket.

Hey Tfin04, have you tried any of kershaw's stud locks that is on the bump or offset . .if so what do you think of those. I find them perfect for my needs, though I don't doing any sort of serious testing on them. I'd say give them a shot. While you are entitiled to your opinion, it would seem that Thomas is genuinely interested in your satisfaction with kershaw, which I think is great from a consumers standpoint and commend.

Excuse me for posting this if someone has already answered - I do not have time before I have to go to look over the entire post, but, does anyone know the price of the Ti/ZDP Leek coming out?

Thanks

Some folks break tips some don't.Never broken a tip off a knife myself, but my son has broken every knife i've given him.Ever heard of 'mechanical sympathy'?

Sorry went off on a tangent there.Got a scanlion(?} black with 3 holes and got my missus the smaller version(chive)? She loves it

Wow... $199 ay? Well, I might as well save my money a little more and go for that rather than the S30V. That would be amazing...

Thanks Thomas, helpful as always man...
