I'm thinkin' that I'd like to get a regular carry knife that's gathers a bit less attention (of the unwanted type) than my current autos, and the Ken Onion series kinda appealed to me. I've played with alot of them, they seem pretty sound. any experiences or perceptions to relate?

I had the Whirlwind and still have the Avalanche. Both of them are very well made. The Avalanche has blade made of better steel, also the handles look (are) better. IMO they open as fast as any auto and people who do not know these knives will not see any difference (I am sure they will think those knives are autos). The only problem I had with the Avalanche was the thumb stud which is quite small and sharp on edges.

I have a boa, in black coating. The "flipper" is very nice, although you'd have a hard time explaining to a cop that you don't have an auto if he saw you open it. The liner lock on mine is very secure, passes the spine whack test, etc. In general, i'm very happy with mine, though i wish it had a little more kick. I heard the whirlwind and blackout tend to be faster, although they have worse blade steel and handle materials. Hope i could be of help.

I really like the Avalanche also. The G-10 and titanium liners are done correctly on this one. Great grippy G-10. Blade steel is 440V. Only complaint I have is size, as I would LOVE to see this one with a 3 3/4" or 4.0" blade!

i've got a whirlwind, and though i havent carried it a lot, it seems well made enough, etc - darned sure works like a switch blade, IMHO, but i usually carry my SIFU, Matriarch, or AFCK - just personal pref's - the kershaw seems like a good knife,,,,,,,

A multi-colored Boa has been my main choice of carry since they first came out. In all that time I haven't found a single thing to complain about.

The Boa has a great blade design and terrific steel. It feels good in the hand, rides well in the pocket, and cuts as well as any knife I've used. The recurve blade, centered point, and finger-guard also make it an effective defensive weapon. The Boa would be an outstanding design without the "speed safe" mechanism.

I had a Ricochet before the Boa and I was pleased with it as well. Ken Onion designs great knives and Kershaw seems to be doing them justice.

I have whirlwind, random task and mini task.
The whirlwind is cheaper and you can feel it. I use it to work in the yard. The random task is my favorite. G-10 polished scales, titanium liners, and 440V stainless blade. Cost twice as much as the whirlwind but you can see and feel the difference. It opens just as fast as any auto, but is legal. If you are going to by on line, be sure to do a search and check out all the sites. The prices differ greatly.

A new model is due out soon. The "Whisper".
Titanium handle with inserts. Here is a link to a picture. Best price I have see so far is $250.00. http://knifedealer.net/c2/knife-news.shtml

Hmm. I like my boa as well, but the thumb ramp quickly sawed through my jeans when I pulled it out of my pocket.

This doesn't happen to you?

Keep an eye out for the Chive...a little tiny guy.

Also if you like the Random Task and mini-task, I think they are being discontiued. Get them while you can.

I have been carrying my Avalanche steadily for the last several months. It is excellent. I consider it to be heavy duty and really like the ergonomics of the handle. The blade holds an edge very well. To me this is about the upper edge in terms of size that I will carry in a folder. I like the subtle curve to the handle, some argue that a knife handle should be straight in line with the blade, to me I like the curve found alot on the Spyderco's also. The quick opening is also a plus. Mine has steel liners and my son has one with titanium. I believe that the earlier ones were titanium. If you do a search on the Avalanche, much has been written about the time they were released. ...Ed.

discontinuing the Random Task?! damn! that's the one that most interests me! Guess I'll be hittin' the OT clock a bit harder than planned this week. Thanks for the input!

I have a blackout, and I really like it. The only problem I have is that I was playing beach volleyball once, and some sand got in the pivot. Seems like nothing I do can get it out. Kinda sucks.

I have the Whirlwind. I like it and believe it's quicker than any auto, only thing I can find wrong with it is it seems to work it's way out of my pocket after sitting down and standing up a few times.I was eating at a resturant one night and I stood up to leave it fail out and popped open.

I have quite a few nice knives, some nice MT auto's that I carry, Legally!
But I recently handled a Boa and I was so impressed, I ordered one. Still waiting for it to come in.

Been carrying a Blackout daily since mid-October. Feel naked without it, but then again, I am naked ...

Nope. I felt it pulling a few times when I first start carrying the Boa, but my draw must have adjusted for it.

When I pay attention to what I'm doing, which is harder than it should be, I seem to be turning the blade side slightly inward as I clear the pocket. I also slide it slightly away from the back seam at the same time, which keeps the index trigger from catching.
