I have a buddy who uses a Leek to skin BEARS that he hunts!! That does not seem to be the right size or blade shape for the task. I thought I'd buy him the Kershaw Mini-Cyclone to use instead. He really likes the assisted opening and prefers the liner lock to a lock-back. Feedback on the Cycone would be greatly appreciated. Also any other suggestions for about $50 would be welcome. Thanks!!:D

I also rather liners to lockbacks, simply because I find them to be more one-hand-closing freindly. Unfortunately, it seems all decent folders in that price range on lockbacks (eg: spydercos).

One that does come to mind, though, is the CRKT M16, although I think it has an AUS-8 blade. On that same line of thought, I had a Junglee Sahara Jr (3" tanto) in AUS-8A that Junglee claims to be 57 rockwell (rC or something?), was a great knife, bought it back in the day when it was going for $35 but I've seen it for a little as $20 these days, though I wonder why (if they cheapened it up). Was an extremely stout and rugged knife, held an edge well and locked up solid.

Well i hope its a good knife. i ordered one the other day. always wanted an AO,
and the cyclone looks the best.

I bought a Cyclone for Christmas, and I have since sold it to one of my coworkers. It was the fullsize version. I liked the opening and the overall feel of it, but was unhappy with the blade. The blade was rather large, and seemed to be flat ground. I actually managed to put a little burr on the edge trying to cut a heavy duty plastic zip-tie. Wasn't very happy about that.

Not saying it was a bad knife. Just didn't fit into the role I put it into.

I handled both and both were great however I went with the mini. I felt the proportions were better, and I know you will like it. Also the selector is sweet!!!

Thanks for the input guys. I don't know which steel my buddy has on his leek, but if it is the 440A then the cyclone will be an upgrade. I asked him and he had no idea. That would seem to indicate he had the 440A as I doubt if he would pay extra for a steel he knows nothing about.

Keep those opinions coming!!:D :D

Well, if your hooked on a Kershaw A.O. folder, and skinning is the task then I would consider something with a deeper belly to the blade. It will reduce hand fatigue and stay sharp longer because it cuts more efficiently. In the price range you're talking about, the Blur would be a good choice.

If you don't require assisted opening, then the Storm or Storm II would be up to the task too.

Lastly, if a fixed blade Kershaw would be more up his alley, then try the Echo.

Just some ideas and opinions. Hope it helps. By the way, I'm taking into account that all of the above can be found on Bladeforums in the price range you're looking for.
