Hi MDP - the answer is never! The SS mechanism is all made of stainless steel and there are no parts to come loose. If you ever wear it out, I bet Kershaw will replace it for free

David,

I reckon if anyone can wear out the Speed-Safe mechanism, you can

. Maybe we should start taking bets on the number of openings

. I had my eye on the Random Task but I think it fits fair and square into my state's definition of a flick knife (as does the Cuda and Leverlock) and as such is a prohibited weapon. Oh well, I guess that's one I can cross off my wish list

Weeeellllll Clay,

My thumb is a bit sore and tired....

About the almost auto thing, I was in a federal zone yesterday, and felt very nervous....

After playing with this, it re-kindles my interest in a Onion custom, by the way, he is a really nice guy to talk to....

Here's to hoping that even my manic opening habit won't wear it out....

Clay or Dexter, could a Spyderco Military be considered a flick knife? I just got mine and it opens quite easily with a snap of the wrist.

Was just wondering

Hi Greg - any locking liner knife can be flicked open easily. This depends on how loose the pivot is set.

Greg,

My comments applied specifically to N.S.W., Australia. This is from the Prohibited Weapons Act 1989:

(15) A knife commonly known as a flick knife that has a blade which opens
automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by any pressure applied to a
button, spring or device in or attached to the handle of the knife.

I wouldn't want to snap my knife open in front of the law with that definition.

Cheers,
Clay

Marion,
Be extremely careful with this Mini-Task.. After you carry it a while you will find yourself coming dangerously close to cutting your thumb off with a regular one hand open knife. You have to re-train your brain if you have several carries, a normal blade feels like mud after getting used to the Onions. I will be writing more about this knife as soon as I hear back from Kershaw.

RadarMan,

The dealer I got it from sells used knives, so I am thinking of selling it back to him at a loss and taking the credit towards a REKAT Escalator or Benchmade Axis or Pinnacle.

The whole "Almost Auto" thing is bothering me, I would really hate to be the guy that sets the legal precedent that it qualifies as an automatic and thus illegal...

And the blade shape is less than perfectly utility...
