Kershaw OD-1

I called the local walmart and they told me they didn't know what a "Kershaw" was. That was the funniest thing I have heard all day. "What is a Kershaw, sir?"

As the new Kershaws are still boxed - the WallyWorlds with the locked/covered pegboard & hook knife display might not get them. Older ones, like my local W-W, that still have a 'sporting goods' counter/register - and a large display cabinet with locking storage behind it - likely already have it, even if they haven't replaced their picture display with the newest one. You may have to look for yourself, as I did. My friendly salesman said last weekend that they hadn't received any new knives. I waited until he was gone and got a friendly & helpful young lady to get out the #64, 66, & 67 - all Kershaw boxes with the American Flag - and viewable from the next aisle. They were the OD-1, Barrage (WallyWorld-only), and Zing. The Zing insisted on coming home with me. So... they may be there if they have the display counter - look for yourself.

Nice review... I may give the OD-1 another 'look' - when I am ready for a return to WallyWorld.

Went to Wally World today and picked me one up. Great knife at a great price. On the way home of course I had to knifestrabate. Ends up the knurled flipper and the screw separated and both pieces went flying. Got home and after about an hour of looking found both pieces. Thank God for magnets. Reattached knurled head, knife and screw - used some Lock Tite to keep every thing together. This screw should be left hand threaded. Every time you flick it open you apply left ward pressure on the knurled head. This pressure wants to loosen the screw.
Anybody else experience this?

Is the 14C28N steel a bit more rust-resistant than the 13C26?

This looks like a great knife, and at such a price, it would be hard to beat.

I grabbed one of these AWESOME folders yesterday. It is a VERY DURABLE Folder .

I believe the 14C28N Blade steel is more corrosive resistant than the 13C26 steel.

I recently got one to try out the new Sandvick steel. Unfortunately the grip didn't line up with my hand at all. Otherwise it seemed like one of the better folders I've handled from Kershaw. The flipper works very well and I like the blade shape.

How was the grip off for you? I am really interested in the OD-1 but in my post back surgery gimpery I have been unable to think to find a local Wally World that is close and actually carries the knife. It looks like a very high quality knife with a steel that on paper should have some real nice edge properties. How sharp has it gotten for you? Have you noticed any minor surface corrosion? The materials and price sure look like a winning combo, just curious to see what a fellow darksider's take on it is. In a couple weeks I should be able to rebevel again making factory edge angles not a huge issue, but if it were close to 15 per side from the factory it would warm my heart.

A G-10 framelock made in the USA for about $40 just seems like too good of bargain to pass up even if it isn't the best knife for me. It could always be a nice gift for a friend or family member (my Dad has too many nice knives to count that were piling up around the house). Actually, a Kershaw Cyclone the Thomas W. had sent me in addition to one I had a warranty issue with was recently sharpened up real nice and given to a neighbor of mine that had been wounded in Afghanistan. Thanks to Thomas my buddy has a nice knife now. I guess the point is to buy a knife if you are in doubt, and be generous with the knives that you can live without.

Mike,

The overall shape of the knife felt good in the hand, but the individual finger contours are shaped for someone with much smaller hands than me. I ended up selling the OD1, and plan to pick up a Groove or something else from their line up that fits my hand better, once the 14C28N ones are released.

Other than my issues with the grip and the bead blasting decreasing corrosion resistance I can't really find any faults with the knife. It's definitely a good value. Most Kershaws are.

The edge geometry is better than some factory edges I've seen, but you or me would definitely be dropping the angle before we put it to real use. It's like the Leek though, in that behind the edge bevel the blade is pretty thin, so once the edge is reprofiled some the overall cutting performance should be very good.

Thanks for the response, I will just have to see if the finger grooves work out for me. Speaking of Grooves, my Dad has one and likes it.

I bought one 2 days ago at Wal-Mart, but unfortunately I did not like the feel of it in my hand, and when closed, the tip of the blade stuck out a bit from the handle. I ended up returning it, which I thought would be tricky, because I had opened up the clamshell packaging to handle it. I made it clear that the knife had NO defects, only that it didn't appeal to me. I wish they'd sell knives out of boxes so you could feel them out first.

I am considering maybe getting a Skyline, which they had there for $35, but would like to feel one out first. It's obviously not a framelock, but in my experience, Kershaw makes good linerlocks.

I checked out a couple of OD-1s and really liked them. When flipped open, the frame lock engaged properly. However in checking the lock, I was able to push the lock bar all the way over to the G-10 handle on both knives.

Was this just a coincidence and both of these knives simply defective? Is the fact that the lock bar can be pushed all the way over even a defect?

Is my walart the only one who carries theivr knives in boxes and not a!
bliister pack ? They also let me take em out and look/ get a feel for them.

I wouldn't think so, I have lots of knives that I can push the lock all the over. If it went all the way over on it's own maybe, but that's still better than not engaging enough.

My Wal-Mart carries them in boxes. In fact, they are number 66 on board. When the guy handed my the box I took it and then told him he gave my 99 by mistake. About the time he started to take it I flipped back over so it read 66 again and smiled. Yeah, I know, I can be a jerk sometimes, but I couldn't resist. :D

lol, thats kinda amusing. im headed over to wally world this weekend after i get paid to look at the barrage and black leek.

I had one sent to me today so I could check out the mechanism for ideas for a knife I'm planning on. I'm supposed to send it back after inspecting it for a few days but, after holding it for 1/2 a day I think the only thing I'm sending is a Pay Pal. I'm pleasantly impressed.

While this thread is a little older, I thought I would do an update on the Kershaw OD-1. While I normally carry a older Spyderco Worker a friend of mine had picked up one of OD-1s at a local gunshow off the guys "barely used" table for $30. The knife was is very nice shape and after playing with the knife during the rest of the show, the flipper really is addictive, I decided to see if I could find one, and if I could beat his "deal" all the better. ;)

Another guy at work found them of all places, on Amazon, for the sum total of $26!! Minutes later we both had them on order. A couple of days later, there they were, the best $26 (including shipping) that could be spent in the knifing world. Razor sharp, excellent manufacturing, MADE in the USA, what more could you want? Buy one, you won't regret it! :)
