Kershaw Offset - just arrived

I think Kershaw is going to hit this one out of the ballpark! The Offset will be worth having simply because of all the "firsts" it does have. Can't wait for them to become readily available.

You know.....sometimes I wish I didn't have to be so pc on this forum, on the flip side, vassili I truely appreciate your comments.

Thomas,

Why don't you post a picture of your personal offset? Then everyone will drool at the possibilities of this kickass folder!!!

Mike :)

I've had the Offset on my wishlist for months now. The only reason I got the Spec Bump was because the Offset wasn't available. My only wish is that they are going to become a little more readily available. I think they look great. I agree on the splatter pattern, brushed aluminum (or even better Ti) I would have liked better, but to make up for it, the clip has a killer look.

Why don't you post a picture of your personal offset?

Ssshhhhh!!! Everyone will want that one if I post a picture of it. You know, like how you tried to talk me out of it at SHOT. Wait...no that was a Zero Tolerance knife, I remember now.;)

I'm kinda hoping the MIM blade acts like Boyd dendretic.

An agressive edge that is very good on fibrous materials yet will take a good working edge. It could make serrations redudant.

Its very heavy for 3,75" blade. How does feel in hand and in pocket? Does it pull the pants down?

Say what you want to say. If you think you can't say it here, Email me or whoever it is you want to address.

I'm sorry that you can't appreciate my comments and my honesty. I'm sorry that I don't want every Kershaw more than any other knife by any other company.

nozh2002- I want an Offset, and I will pay for one. But there are many knives I want more and many knives that are far better knives for the money. How much the knife costs to make doesn't matter to me. I care about how good it is.

But that "Edited for kindness" of his is very nice.
As for Thomas, great to have him here, I just wonder if as a representative of the company it wouldn't be wiser to be cautious and reticent about posting comments that go beyond the informational and could be seen as partial and proactive/aggressive - there's us independent enthusiasts for that.
As for the Offset, I got into major difficulty for wanting it so much.
It's almost a year ago that I delayed the delivery of a major order because I wanted the Offset to be included in it.... big mistake, since the delivery didn't start until the end of 2005 - no matter how much I pestered dear Megan and folks at Kershaw - and my dealer got so impatient with me he went back on his word that he'd pre-ordered it for me.
So now I can only envy those who made the wise decision to go for it as soon as they could, and be adroit enough to already get it. There's no question about it being worth it, at least to us Kershaw/Onion lovers who already have the Bump, and think all the other knives on the list can well wait a bit more :)

Hair, just so you know, I was referring to brianml and LHD comments, not yours. Although I may not agree with everything you posted, I know your comments were thought out and not meant to criticize, and I appreciate that.

It is kind of frustrating on certain threads when a strong post is made (brianml), it gets questioned, but then a follow up response never happens?? I trust you all wont mind me challenging you on occasion (sorry if I came off aggressive)? I would expect the same in return. (LCD thanks)

I think you all are getting that I am very passionate about Kershaw, and am excited with the current direction we are heading. It seems most here feel the same way. Kershaw will keep moving forward in a performance oriented direction with the likes of more MIM/HIP blades, a hot ZDP project, there is a sweet titanium frame lock pattern on the table, a Sandvik economy SpeedSafe, and truthfully many more. Hopefully we can satisfy a bunch of you all, even if it's with just one piece. Just know that we'll keep listening, and I'll keep posting when you need me.

Vassili,

Thanks for the pictures, they look really good. I didn't think I'd be very interested in the Offset initially, but I think I've changed my mind. I hope other handle versions are offered in the future. The multi-color thing just doesn't do for me and I've never liked metal handles that much. That said, I do like how they've been grooved like the Spec Bump. If Kershaw comes out with a 3D G-10 version (again, like the Spec Bump) I'd be all over it. :D

editted to add: Thomas W, thanks for your participation here at BFC. It helps immensely when there is someone from a company to interact with. I wish more companies would do the same.

I know you are passionate about Kershaw and it's great to have support and insight from the mfg.

I takes time though, right?... to get all the new project going. "The larger the ship, the harder to steer."

I think Kershaw is doing great in many areas of the knife market, keep it up and thanks for stopping by Thomas.

It is 4" (101mm) x 1 13/32"(36mm) x 5/32"(4mm) and 8.98oz (254.8g). Yes it is big and heavy it is twice heavier then Military - it is defenetly not a clipit. This knife fill and feel as a handgun, in addition it has all this mechanics everywhere, so it really feels like gun in your hand.

With quite secure grip, because of 3d handle I am not afraid to use it with all forse applied - I fill I may hit really hard if I need, in this area of sence it is as a good big fixed blade fighter.

I always like this feeling of "being armed" - some kind of "end of stone age" genetic memory I guess - "Lisen to me all you predatos - Now I have a knife against you claws!".

Thanks, Vassili.

P.S. I have nise leather belt to carry as many knives as I like...

From

http://www.kinetics.com/metal/process.shtml

About MIM technology:

"Compounding Feedstock

Fine metal powders (generally <25 microns in diameter) are combined with a polymer binder system to form a feedstock suitable for injection molding. Kinetics' feedstock is compounded using specific binder and metal powder formulations to control consistency, quality, and dimensional repeatability of parts produced.

Injection Molding

While standard plastic injection molding machines and molds are used to produce MIM parts, due to the presence of the polymer binder in MIM feedstocks, mold cavities are designed approximately 20% larger than the final part size. Like plastics, MIM molds may have multiple cavities, inserts, slides, unscrewing cores, and hot runner systems. Kinetics can help you determine the most cost effective tooling approach for your application from prototype to production.

Debinding and Sintering
After molding, green parts are debound and sintered at temperatures up to 2,600°F. During debinding, the polymer binder breaks down and dissipates while the metal particles retain all of the molded features. The metal particles fuse together during sintering and the part shrinks approximately 20% to form a solid metal part."

From KnifeCenter:
"Here's how MITE works: A blade mold is created and filled with a combination of powdered metal and binder. When it comes out of the mold, the blade is 20% larger than its finished size. The next stage of the process, sintering, removes the binder. Once it is sintered, the blade has reached its finished size and is at a density of 94%. Finally, the blade is HIPed under extreme pressure, approximately 32,000 psi, to increase the metal density to 99.7%."

Thanks, Vassili.

If you go to the Kershaw website, it's already has the Speed bump and the S30V Spec bump on it.

The splash handle pattern doesn't bother me too much, as changing handle color is easy as flitz, some elbow grease, and a cigarette ;)

Very cool to have such an active participation from someone at Kershaw! I'm really looking forward to all of Kershaw's new stuff, as it seems they are really stepping it up in the industry, and raisin' the bar as to what should be expected from a production kife company, in terms of features/technology vs. price, IMO. <shameless plug off>

The Spec-bump is gonna be a tough one to beat, but from what I saw at SHOT, it's just a prelude to some really cool stuff  :D

Mike :)
