Welcome to the Blade Forums. :)

I would try this question in the General Forum.

completely different beasts. chopper vs folder.

until you specify your intentions with said knives, the only answers you'll get are personal opinions that may not revolve around your area or your purpose for the blade.

welcome to the forums.

I really like my Kershaw OutCast but for the same money I would get two Beckers. Say a BK2 and BK7. For a folder you can not go wrong with any of Chad's Bokers

I have an Outcast and it's a really well made knife but the edge is way too thick. It's probably the dullest knife I've ever bought.

i know this isnt one of the choices that you put up but why not get a knife like a RC-3 a mid sized fixed blade is basically all you need for most applications if you need to cut something big a rat is plenty sturdy enough to baton. get a Rat Rc-3 or 4 and then get a leatherman multi tool or a spyderco tenacious and youll have all you can really need for almost any situation.

then sharpen it

Yep is what I did. Reprofiled with a 25 degree edge. Chopped up a couple of branches and trimmed the branches off of these fallen trees. Still cut paper when I was done. D2 is some tough stuff it literally ate the stones on my Gatco sharpening system and took a good 20 hours serious. With my EdgePro Pro 2 Kit it took minutes and the stones had no visible wear. Best sharpening system ever and the last one I will ever need to buy. The OutCast is a great chopper and solid general use camp knife

Outcast totally....all around better knife unless you change your other option from a recon 1 to something worth buying.

The outcast is a great knife if you're willing to put some work into it. The edge comes way too thick. I also think the black coating with the giant logo is kinda ugly.

I reprofiled mine to a convex edge with 20-degree edge angle. I then reground it to remove the coating and thin it out a bit. It can now chop down trees and then slice up some tomatoes for dinner, very nice.

The only edge damage I've seen with this setup is a little chipping from hitting rocks on accident. It's surprisingly tough and holds its edge a long time.

then sharpen it

I guess you don't own an Outcast and have not looked at the extremely thick angle of the edge. It needs more than a simple "sharpening". Ever notice how many people have to "reprofile" their Outcasts and not just "sharpen" them?

i reprofiled mine into a convex edge. it took a bitchin long time cause i did it by hand but it was well worth it. chops awesome now.

Both are good and tough knives in their own right. What it really comes down to is fixed vs. folder as a camp knife. Normally I would say to have both on hand, but if I really had to choose, I would go with a fixed blade.

I have a recon 1 and I love it.:D its a great "(tactical) feild/utility knife" and is my favorite EDC.
it saved a 3 day camping trip I was on with 8 friends. (no one brought tent stakes, and it was a very windy night) as a utility knife the recon 1 fits the bill, imho. people have there opinions about the company though.
as for the outcast? I personally and with no experiece with the knife, I think it is just to big for smaller tasks to be a "utility knife", although my definition of utility knife could be different that yours. porbably a great chopper though.

hope this helps!

I do and did. As I said it took some effort because of the high quality / hardness of D2 but it was well worth it. Now I have to buck up and convex it As has been said the Outcast is an impressive chopper and holds its edge well enough to be a respectable slicer dicer. Few other knives can can make that claim.

I have a Recon, and I used it and liked it, until I bought my first Emerson. Don't even know where the Recon is now. Nice, sturdy knife for the money.
