Just bought a Kershaw "Starter" from the "Own-It" series. Anyone else own one of these "entry-level" Kershaws? And how do they stack up to the real thing considering they are 1/2 price? Thanks.

The one I bought just to try out, lost all tension in the framelock, from just being stored about a year or so. I didn't even hardly use it, tossed it in a drawer and the other day noticed it won't lock up at all. Cheap & rough IMO, you can do better even for the low price.

We've sold a ton of them and haven't had any complaints that I am aware of. For the money they're a popular groomsman gift and look good rotary engraved. I think they're a good knife for the money, a little heavy for an EDC blade personally, but overall they're nice for $20.

The lock-up on the one that I got in a WalMart holiday pack looks just like this. Unless you squeeze the lockbar inward, the blade will fold with the lightest touch (and this was from right out of the package). I am, admittedly, a huge Kershaw/ZT fan, and I will eventually send this one in for repair or replacement (as soon as I have something else to send in with it, might be a while), but this is not acceptable, and no way to win new customers.

They are the real deal, but as you say they are very much entry level knives. I'd guess knives for people that use a knife maybe once a month or so, or just need a toolbox or tackle box knife. I don't think one of these would last a days work with me. I don't own one of these, but have handled other Kershaw budget models and they were much more solid than these are.

I guess they were going on clearance in the 5 to 7 dollar range at wally world as of late. I wish i knew this before i paid full price! I got my little brother (non knife guy...yet) the set....hoping it sparks his interest in the hobby. The little multitool is probably a better buy than the knife though. The light is like a harbor freight freebie, and the dog tag is just extra crap in my opinion. For the price though, its tough to beat.

They're really bottom barrel stuff, 3Cr13 steel is really bad in a myriad of ways. I love Kershaw (and ZT) products in general, but I cannot possibly advise anyone to buy on of the "Own It" models with 3CR13 blades. However, I do STRONGLY recommend that one buy a Thermite (satin or blackwash) for roughly $25 using 8Cr13MOV or even on of the Kershaw Emerson collabs in 8Cr14MoV for about the same price.

Bottom line: don't buy the 3Cr13 "Own it" knives, do buy the other budget Kershaws like the Thermite in 8Cr13 or 14. Trust me, I own about a dozen.

After looking at the packaging it says the blade length is 3.75! Ummm not a chance. They could have at least got the specs right on the package. Kershaw must be outsourcing the production to a different manufacturer than the typical china stuff , maybe only to the bottom of the barrel walmart stuff, but either way dissapointing to hear about the cheap.....or cheapest steel choice. After looking at the construction next to the lifter, which is what i thought it would be its a bit different. No lock bar stabilizer, centering is off quite a bit and feels more like a gas station 5 dollar special.

Wow. I thought it was a good deal, but now that I've seen this thread, it looks like Kershaw didn't even try.

A company's entry-level products are very important. They're what most people are going to buy to introduce themselves to a company's quality levels and see what their blades are like. My first Kershaw was a Crown. Came air-splittingly sharp, and I was so happy with it that I gave it to my father, as he needed a quality knife. I miss it, and now I want to buy another. I've got my Oso Sweet in my pocket right now, and it's the only liner lock folder I've owned that I trust 100%, even more than my blue titanium Cold Steel Ti-Lite (primary reason for that one is I can't friggin' sharpen it, the previous owners dulled it to all hell and I'll have to send it in; admittedly I have the sharpening skills of a drunken giraffe).

On an off note....My Walmart started labeling the blade steel on the knives in their display cabinet. Most are Kershaw, Gerber, Buck and Camillus.
A nice touch for the more serious knife enthusiast.

I bought a Kershaw Brookside on sale at a local sporting goods shop for $18. The packaging lists it as part of the Blackwash Own It series. Not a bad knife at all for the cost. Certainly better than some of the atrocious low budget Kershaws I've seen at Wal-Mart like the Amplitude 3.25, etc.. The Brookside has a 8CR13 blade, glass filled nylon scales. Blade grinds are even, lockup is solid, and blade perfectly centred in the handle when closed. Quite a bargain for $18.

i have the kershaw lifter. didnt realize it was 3cr i thought it was 8 like the cryo. it doesnt really hold an edge but the knife itself has taken tons of abuse such as dropping and stuff never had problems with the lock or anything

Like the blade shape on that. Might have to keep an eye out for one.

I just picked one up last night. Dicks sporting goods has this knife on sale right now for $20. go to your local store or their website lists it and of course it's free shipping. it's definitely a nice knife for the price. the handle looks a little cheap but it actually feels real good in the hand.
