When I first saw the Packrat I thought Wow! that's a wonderful design. I thought the blade was a practical shape, knife had high-quality materials, and I also liked the AO. I'm right handed but like carrying at least one knife on my left side. I know the Packrat, like too many others, didn't have the option of left hand carry, but I was willing to use a lanyard or drop it in my pocket to be able to use such a great design.

I quickly bought one online and it arrived a few days later. Returned it to Kershaw within the week. The photos from the thread below show how close the thumb studs are to the handles. That's the problem. I was completely unable to open the knife using the thumb studs with my left hand. It was possible but not easy or comfortable to open with my right hand. The difference is on the left side (which you would engage with your right hand for opening) the handle scale is relieved slightly to allow access to the liner lock, and therefore there is a bit more room between the thumb stud and the handle to allow your thumb to engage.

I would not buy the Packrat unless you will only open it with the flipper. What a shame. I had high hopes for this knife. I also wish it were a bit larger, which is unusual for me to say because I generally prefer small knives.

While its true that the thumb studs are ill placed to open the knife, why would you use them? This flipper is so easy and so fast, it's just plain fun. I agree that the knife could be about half inch longer, but I still find the handle to be excellent, both in grip and texture, the blade shape is waaay cool AND practical, the clip retention is adjusted perfectly..... this is one GREAT knife! Oh yeah, and it cuts real well too :)

The flipper worked fine, but I'm simply not used to using it. I am used to using my thumbs to open just about every knife I own. I also felt since Kershaw put two thumb studs on the Packrat then they should be functional. It would be fine if the Packrat didn't have them and it was marketed as strictly a flipper because I wouldn't have bought one in the first place...but don't put them on and advertise it as having dual thumb studs if they don't work.

I agree the handle and blade shape are super cool. If Kershaw fixes the thumb stud placement I'll be the first to buy another Packrat.
