I'm very close to purchasing a Kershaw R.A.M., but at several online sites, I've noticed two different styles of this knife. Look closely at the ends of the handles farthest from the blades and you'll see what I mean.

So why are they different? Which version is the newest? Which is the best?
I want tip up carry, right and left hand side. Will either version do this? And I also do not want "deep pocket" carry. Which should I go with?

The first picture was never actually made, it was just the picture kershaw put up on their site and then others used it on their site, but was never actually produced. The ram has tip up carry, left and right hand, and it is not a deep carry clip either, so any ram you get will be the on that you want, hope this helps.

Thanks for that information! I like the looks of the second photo better. Why on Earth did Kershaw put out a photo of their knife that does not accurately portray the way it looks? Do you own one of these? And if so, how do you like it?

That's the R.A.M. prototype, and yes it was "produced" as a proto. Kershaw puts up proto photos so that people can see what the general look of the knife is going to be. After testing, feedback, etc. they change the proto.

I, and many of my buddies have R.A.M.'s--it's one of my fastest and most-fun folder to play with. You're going to love yours!

Ahhh...good to know.

I had heard somewhere that Kershaw had made some improvements to the RAM design (most notably an improvement to the grip on the lock mechanism) and I thought that OP's picture was an image of the new, 'improved' version. Can anyone confirm whether or not they did any such modification to the RAM recently?

I'll be happy with it either way...I just ordered one and I'm really looking forward to testing it out. :D

Pull the trigger on the RAM, it's a GREAT knife. One of my favorites to mess with when I get out all of my knives. It opens lightning fast, is very sharp, and feels great in the hand. You can't go wrong with this knife.

The bottom photo of the RAM in the OP is how it looks now.

I have one and I think it's a very good knife. I don't care for the thumb studs and they only get in the way for me because I only use the flipper. Otherwise, it's a good user knife with good ergonomics. It's not made from some super steel but edge holding seems fine to me and it's not too hard to sharpen.

Curious -- why not?

For one of the same reasons RandomAyes mentioned above: I have trouble quickly drawing a knife that carries deep in the pocket. I'm able to draw a knife easier when about an inch or so of the handle sticks up out of my pocket.

I think they should have made the blade release a little taller. Its hard to push down without using my fingernail. What I did was carve around the button at an inward angle. Now I can more easily release the blade pushing on it with my thumb.

Or even better yet would be if the button was pushed to released instead of being pulled.

Just got mine. Friggin' flawless fit and finish. Love the lock - no blade play, smooth action, and easy to use. Strangely, I find it easier to use with my left hand than with my right...

I don't think you'll be disappointed with it. I'm pretty impressed with it so far.

I have one and absolutely love it. Fav kershaw by far and maybe fav edc altogether. Reminds me a lot of my spyderco native. I think its the strongest, play free, folder I own.

I just got a RAM this week and am very impressed. Feels like a more expensive knife. Super fit & finish, great lockup and smooth, quick opening.

Just picked a blem from Kershawguy at a great price. After playing with it for an hour or so I really like the feel of the knife. The flipper has a great action, easier to flip than the JYD, but it is a much smaller blade than the JYD also. I like the ability to "choke up" on the knife if needed. I'm not usually crazy about aluminum handle knives but the G-10 is just enough for a good gripping surface, not bare aluminum. My blem came very sharp and can not find any mark that makes it a blem in my opinion. Will EDC it for a couple of days and then see how it has worked out. GET ONE I don't think you will be dissapointed!

^^ I got a blem from him too. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for the knife. Was a bit disappointed with the ergos. Expected more from all the great reviews. Wish the release was on the other side of the blade. Works better left handed because I can use my fingers and not my thumb on the release. It is smooth though.

Mine has a noticeable blem. The 4 others I got from him, not so much.

Well, after hearing a ton of recommendations, and not too many nays, I ordered one today. I should have it in 4 to 5 days. I'll report back then. Thanks for all the responses.

I have lots of minor fit and finish problems on the two I've had, but other than that, one of my favorite knives ever. I'm glad to hear you purchased it, although the original prototype with the terraced lock release would have been better. They actually did use that lock release in the MUDD and it's a big improvement. At any rate, it's still an amazing knife. You'll enjoy it.
