Kershaw R.A.M.

I received my new RAM today! Overall, I'm very pleased. It came shaving sharp, right out of the box, but all of the Kershaw's I've bought came very sharp. I do wish it were bigger, but I knew what size it was when I ordered it. This same design with a 4-5 inch blade on it would be awesome. I do like the feel of the G-10, and the click of the lock when it is opened. It flicks open fairly easily to not be an assisted model. I wish it had just one large thumb stud instead of the three small ones on each side. They don't stick out far enough for me to grip easily, but I have big thumbs. I like using the flipper anyway. This is one of the few knives that I can open just as easily with either hand. I'm glad I bought it, and I hope Kershaw will make a larger version.

The only use for the thumbstuds I found was for spyderdropping it, which works pretty well. But if you're just learning it, do it away from your body over your bed so you don't drop a blade on your foot.

Otherwise, the thumbstuds suck. Fortunately, the flipper is the best I've ever used and if you just hold down the lock you can wrist flick it open and closed.

Congrats. I always recommend this knife to people but they almost ALWAYS seem to get the minigrip or the delica. It's pretty frustrating.

yep, the best way to open a RAM is with the flipper. No doubt about it.
However, i use the mini-studs to walk the blade open. i understand that some mothers don't like strangers flicking a knife out effortlessly and with lightening quick speed in front of their children. i use the small thumb studs if i want to open the knife slowly... grocery stores, bus stops, malls, carnivals/fairs, etc... I'm glade that it has something there so i have the option to open it slowly, even tho i use the flipper a majority of the time. (i know its possible to use the flipper silently, but you have to admit that the mini studs are a more sure way to make sure the blade doesn't bounce around). i can also flick the knife open with my index finger using the mini studs -which is kind of fun and different way to open my RAM... anyways, i kind of like the RAM with low profile studs. I'm not sure if i would like the RAM with full size studs- it just wouldn't be right.

Anyways, the reason why i searched for a Kershaw ram thread?...i was thinking about how much i love my RAM. I would love it if Kershaw would do a limited run with a composite blade or an upgraded steel. That would be sweet! The people [me] have spoken.

Please, for the love of god, do a high-end RAM for $100 plus or whatever you want to charge. Give me an uncoated CB blade, the terraced lock button, maybe titanium instead of aluminum (I don't really care that much, but hey, why not) and so on. Then I can sell all my other knives.

Side note, if you love the RAM, you should check out the CRKT Ripple and Eros. They're the first knives (other, obviously, than the MUDD) that I felt were competitors for smoothness and flipper quality.

i would like a terraced lock button too. one of my Rams sticks and so the button looks a little beat up because i have use my fingernail to unstick it. maybe mill it out of a metal, that way the jimping stays sharp... not needed if terraced, but it would be a nice touch.

(side note, Spyderco should make their Caged Ball lock out of metal instead of plastic. dont get me wrong, i think the polymer is plenty durable and it plenty strong for its application, its low friction properties probably make it favorable to use as a cage for the the ball lock....but its because its low friction that i think it should be metal, a metal cage would allow Spyderco to put sharper jimping that a user can really grip. i know this doesnt belong in this thread, but it was on my mind. so i wrote it.)

And it would look a lot better too. I think the IP counsel Spyderco has is probably somewhat concerned that they may be making the BB lock legally too similar to the axis lock.

I just wish they'd go back to the old bb. it looked cool, it worked fine.
