I am 16 and im finally allowed to carry a blade on me ( besides in school) I am looking for a high quality e.d.c knife that will last me a very long time. I don’t need anything more than a 2- 1/2 inch blade. I would like it to be spring assisted but not full auto. Im setting the budget at $40. So what I have came up with was the s.o.g flash one and kershaw scallion. I see from reviews they are both high quality but I don’t know if I can trust the 420HC steel on the scallion. On the other hand I like that the scallion has a thicker blade. I would like to know how these knife perform over time, witch you would go with and if you guys have any other knifes that fits in these categories it will be appreciated.

The scallion is a very good knife. I have had one for some time, I have used that little knife for many things a big knife would normally be required for. Besides it is really fun to open and close when your board! Come to think of it, I am going to go play with mine while I watch tv!!! :-) get on, you won't regret it! Holds a great edge!

I own a Flash II. Cheap and nasty spring to mind.
My Scallion, which I have owned for quite some years is superbly made, and very durable.

Perfect to carry in the pocket due to the excellent clip. My only dislike is the awkward safety.
They really are well built, and I have not heard of any degeneration in build quality over the years.

Easily sharpened, but I find regular touch ups needed; this is probably related to how much cardboard it goes through.

Kershaw Scallion is one of my favorite small knives, actually one of my overall favorites. I definately reccommend it.

Besides, it is fun to play with :D

For $40 you could also get the Kershaw OD-1 from Walmart or the Zing. They both have better steel in the blade. I'm not sure if the ~3 inch blade would rule those out though.

For that price point id get a Kershaw Zing, just as fast as those two knives with a better blade steel.
Or for just a little more money you could get a Benchmade Mini Griptilian, which is an awesome knife IMO, one of my favorites.

i wish i could get a benchmade but i would have to sell two of my ka-bars!!! i have a hard time believing that benchmade has twice the quality as most other knife companies

Benchmade is the first company on my list of fav's. It says it all right in the name :-).

I recommend that you take a look at a Kershaw leek. 3" blade but there are hundreds of handle/steel combos to choose from. If you can afford it the g10 leek with s30v blade is a sweet knife.
Don't be afraid of big knives though. I have a Blur and the big handle and great ergos make it very comfortable. I have small hands but love having the large size of my Blur. That's just me preference though. Just because you don't need a big knife doesn't mean that you wouldn't like one. I started wanting a chive and got a Blur... And I'm glad I did.

I too have both and when you flip the Scallion you know you mean business. Very fast as where the flash 1 is a little slow. I do prefer the clip of the sog though for more concealability.

sell em then! LOL
check out the zing they've got em at wally world for around 40 bucks, great knife for the price

You usually get what you pay for. Benchmade doesn't own the above $75 dollar marketplace. There're comparable Kershaw's and Spyderco's as well in that price range. ;)

I however regretted buying my Sog Trident Tanto when I was a noob. It's now in my friends hands, and even he thinks its cheap... I guess we don't appreciate un-grippy plastic handles around here...

But to stay on topic, I would definitely go after the zing/OD-1 instead of the scallion, just because of a significant steel upgrade for around the same price. Just head to your local walmart, and you can play with them.

I have the Flash II and the Scallion in all black. My Scallion is heavier than a Flash I due to all metal construction. Flash I is nice and light. I think there are better options out there like the already mentioned Kershaw OD-1, the Kershaw Skyline, though both are non-AO. If you want AO, check out the SOG Twitch II. It has a 2.68" blade with aluminum handles/scales. It is a very classy, subdued and simple design. The AO action is fast and smooth. Add in excellent the fit and finish and the knife just screams jewel-like. The AUS8 blade is a decent steel that won't break the bank, sharpens up quite respectably and holds an edge adequately. Oh, and you can get them for $40 at Lowes or less online.

I had a SOG Flash (it was returned quickly) and it was damn sharp great feel in the hand but the blade wobbled all over the place right out of the box. After handling 2 more and the same play in the blade, I said "I would like to look at the Kershaws".

I have a Kershaw Blur, Whirlwind, Scallion, and Blackout. Love 'em all.

Just my $0.02.

Scallion hands down !
