I know nothing about the SG2 Kershaw uses in their Ti JYD II but I like the looks of the knife. What's the skinny on SG2? TIA

SG-2 is made by Takefu Specialty Steel. I can run down its chemistry, but the bottom line is that it cuts and holds an edge like ZDP-189, but is easier to sharpen.

here are the specs on sg2 alloy
c-1.3 to 1.45
cr-14 to 16
mn-.4
mo-2.3 to 3.3
van.-1.8 to 2.2
looks good should out perform vg10
however i've learned steel compos do'nt always perform the same way the charts show in real life.

Yep, Agree with J. Curd. It's almost like a powder steel version of BG42 in some ways. It won't out wear the 9% vanadium steels like S90V, but it will do well enough, and take really amazingly sharp edges, and runs great at RC 62 without any brittleness. I like it a bunch.

:) Version 2.0 of the charts I am currently working on will be mucho better, or so I hope. More data and more precise too. Plus search/filtering improvements.

The responses so far have been very good:thumbup:, but I'd like to add that if the SG2 JYD II is the knife you are considering, just keep in mind that the factory grind is ridiculously thin! I mean that in a very good way. I have a couple of them and they are like lasers out of the box. Stay on top of regular sharpening touch ups and you're good to go:thumbup:

The SG2 as used in the Kershaw Ti JYD II is amazing. As Jonnymac mentioned, frequent touch-ups are better than a major sharpening. I like Mastiff's description of SG2 being like a powder version of BG-42. An excellent description.

I have one in SG-2 coming this week that I will test for edge retention on rope to see were it fits in.

I was surprised to see this thread pop up. FWIW I purchased a blem Ti JYD from kershawguy after posting this thread and have been carrying/using it off and on all year. In fact it was in my pocket for several days last week.

It's been a heck of a cutter and has held up well whether breaking down boxes, opening letters, thinning out the bushes around the house or processing a chicken for the skillet. A little touchup on my Sharpmaker is all it's ever needed.

Are there other knives out there with this steel?

I would love to try out that JYD 2, but... man that pocket clip is about as fugly as you could get. Certainly doesn't go together with dress slacks and a button up shirt that I have to wear to the office. They will think that I am carrying around the bat-a-rang.... But I do like the looks of the actual knife and have heard it it very comfortable. I think Gayleans pro series have much better clips.

That's what I have coming, they say that SG-2 holds an edge like ZDP-189.

I guess I will see what happens once it gets here. :)

I'd love to see more testing. In the past there were very contradicting reports about SG2.

I am compling data right now as I test, I have 6 steels run sofar, SG-2 coming this week and S90V coming soon.

Once they are done and a few more I will post the data.

Totally different testing format on rope.
