Kershaw Skyline vs Spyderco Tenacious

Depends on your personal preferences..

Skyline is going to have less of a presence in your pocket.
It only has one liner, where as the Skyline has two liners.

The Tenacious looks chunkier, but has a nice grip. Will fit larger hands better.

Both have G-10 scales, and the blade steels will perform similarly (in my experience). Both easy to touch-up/sharpen and will take a nice edge. 8CR13MOV might be less corrosion resistant than 14C28N, but I've never had problems.

Skyline is also USA made..

Have fun with your decision!

Depends on personal preference. Personally I love the skyline, it is the knife that sucked me into this hobby and I am in the process of collecting all the rare ones. I do like spyderco knives but I am more of a kershaw fan and will admit that. I have lost count of how many skylines I have gifted but it is my favorite knife under 100 dollars. If there is any way you could find a store that carries both or know people with them so you could handle them before buying that would make your decision for you. I honestly believe you will be happy either way and will develop a strong brand loyalty to whichever you get.... Oh yeah forgot about blade steals, the 14c28n on the skyline is much better than 8cr13mov. 8cr takes an insanely sharp edge but looses it much quicker than the 14c, I would say the 8cr lasts 2/3 as long maybe. 8cr will rust if you don't keep a close eye on it as well where you can worry less about the 14c. Sorry for the abbreviations I didn't want to keep typing out the full steel names.

I prefer the Skyline as well, though both are very nice knives for the money.

Gotta vote for the Skyline. I edc'd one for a few months and it is very comfortable, especially if you have to wear a suit. The steel holds an edge well and I never had a problem with rust.
I've never owned a Tenacious but my experience with 8cr has been pretty negative. It doesn't hold an edge well and is much more prone to rust.

I'm in the minority that dislikes the Skyline. From the flipper action, to the non-functioning thumb studs, to the excessively grippy G10, to the blunt blade shape, and to its flimsy profile, the skyline fails to live up to the hype that created its popularity (largely attributed to Nutnfancy's questionable knife taste and reviews). It's a decent value for the price, but you're better off saving for a better model.

I'd take the Tenacious over the Skyline, but the Tenacious does not appeal much either. Honestly, if you're looking for something in the Tenacious/Skyline price range, consider a Cold Steel models (Voyager, AK, Recon, and the new 2013 models). Better locks, equivalent steel, and better slicing performance.

...Suppose I'm spoiled on Golden and Techung Spydercos, USA Benchmades, and CRK, =/.

Another vote for the Skyline. It's just a great overall knife and great for EDC. It's slimmer and lighter, making it almost unnoticeable in pocket. The high hollow grind on the thin blade makes it a fantastic slicer. The G10 provides good grip, wet or dry, and the flipper is easy to use, even with gloves (and somewhat addictive to just flip incessantly). The Sandvik 14C28N seems to take a consistently finer edge and retain it a bit better than 8Cr13MoV.

I would suggest looking at a Delica or Endura instead if you prefer the Spyderco design. The Tenacious just feels unnecessarily bulky, and despite that, doesn't even feel especially solid. The Delica/Endura actually feel much more solid than the Tenacious series. The ergonomic contours on the Tenacious are similar to the Delica/Endura, but not nearly as well implemented. Also, the VG-10 steel on the Delica/Endura is an excellent blade steel.

It's a matter of opinion as the CS knives you listed make me want to lose my lunch and I would not consider AUS8 on par with 14C28N from my experience with both steels same goes for 8cr13mov. I'm not a fan of tactical or overbuilt knives. I can say having EDCed a Skyline for 3 years that it carries well holds and edge and can even take some abuse. But that is just my opinion.

If you like the looks of both I think the Skyline has an edge especially as an EDC

Gotta defend my Voyager here :grumpy: you can get a large size for $40 or under, as cheap or cheaper than I've found the Tenacious or Skyline, steel is about the same as the Tenacious, FFG, comfy handle and bombproof reliable lock. Forget about the pocket clip though, and it's half an inch wide... not a very exciting knife, but a super solid worker. Not what the OP is looking for though, too bulky.

These are two very different knives. I own a Tenacious and only handled a Skyline, I like the Tenacious better. The Tenacious feels more solid compared to the Skyline. Not that the Skyline is flimsy, it is just a very different knife being it is thin and light. The Tenacious fits my hand better, and I like the styling better. Its my type of knife. The Skyline does have somewhat better steel and its made in the USA, something to consider. As suggested, you should try to fondle the knives so you can make your own decision. I love Kershaw and most of my knives are Kershaws. Kershaw has a great selection of knives in this price range, and check out Kershawguy thread here too!

The fit and finish on the Tenacious is excellent for a knife in its price range. I couldn't believe my eyes when I first laid my hands on one. I have since bought almost all of the knifes in that line. With that said I am also not a huge fan of flippers that are not auto assist. Take it for what its worth but I would go for the Spyderco everyday.

Of the two, I'd buy the Skyline.

But for just a wee bit more, I have a soft spot in my heart for the Delica and Endura. Great knives, priced reasonably.
