Hey guys, I made a thread before regarding the Speed bump and endura. My question is how many of you have experience with these knives and which should I get. My girlfriend and I are having an anniversary soon and she wants me to get me a knife so I've narrowed it down to these:

The Speed Bump from Kershaw: I really don't like the look of the handles and I'm not sure about the steel but everything else looks awesome.

The Griptilian from Benchmade: Pretty much like this one i just think it looks kinda meh.

The Endura 4 (stainless steel handles and spyderedge): I have a pe FRN endura 4 and I love it. Love everything about the Endura just wanted one in Se and Ss.

So what do you guys think? I've never owned or held any of these specific knives.

Also, if you have other suggestions please keep it 50-$65. :D

2Brothers has a Speed Bump with aluminium handles that is much nicer IMO.

I would go with either the Speed Bump or Endura. If it's plastic handles on the Speed Bump that bother you, don't let it, they are very comfortable.

Yeah it certainly is much better looking. Wow I like how that looks and still $55! anybody have experience with this knife?

Indeed, they look very ergonomic, but cheap/that greyish silver tone that i hate. Now that I see this speed bump with aluminum handles im starting to like it much more.

The aluminum Speed Bump is a great knife.
The handles aren't as comfortable as the akulon ones, but they are tougher and the knife ends up being slimmer.

The stud lock is a great ambidextrous lock too.

I like a slim knife. Whats the texture like on the aluminum? Just a powdery dull texture?

Also, What is the blade like? Is it functional, useful, etc.? I love the blade shape.. Gorgeous.

I really don't like the Speed Bump. I didn't like the recurve on the ZT302 I had and this one just seems obnoxiously pronounced.

Grips are grips. Thick handle takes up a lot of pocket space.

I can't say I'd recommend the SS Endura either though. It's heavy, almost 6oz. I would much prefer the FRN version of that knife.

Overall if you're considering the Speed Bump, my first instinct would be to say consider the Spec Bump. That's out of your listed range though. Speed Bump if you like, Endura if you must. Grips.... eh.

I have one of the Spec Bumps, essentially a higher end Speed Bump.

For a $100 or so, that knife isn't bad. Assisted opening has its points, but not enough to carry the knife as an EDC. The Stud-lock I never have become comfortable with, though the lock appears strong and reliable. The blade shape is another issue of contention - it seems to work well, but is the shape sufficiently better to justify the sharpening attention needed by the exaggerated recurve - I don't think so.

Overall, the Bump in Spec and Speed versions is a knife that one may try but I think few are carried for long.

For Griptillians, I prefer the Ritter versions. I am not a fan of the full-size Griptillians, but do regularly carry a mini verion. Eitherway, the design is pretty decent and being "plain" has its advantages ("sheeple" don't faint or accuse you of being a mass-murdering "prevert", for example, at the mere sight of these knives).

Since you already have an Endura, you know its strengths, etc. Do you want to start a collection of these knives? If so, look for a more unique versions is my advice, since spares are nice, but a ZDP or H1 version brings more uniqueness.

So the general consensus is that the speed bump is okay but not great and Screw the griptilian.

Well this may affect my opinions.. Hmmm..

To answer your question orthogonal: I don't have any intentions of starting a endura collection but Spyderco is my favorite company by far.

So i guess the question as changed to which spyderco would be a good choice for 50-$65 i don't need info on the knives just opinions/perspectives. Please leave out tenacious/centofante/persistence.

thanks

Delica, Salt I, Pacific Salt, Tasman Salt, Atlantic Salt, Rescue (93/79). Couple off the top of my head.

I wouldn't discount the Speed Bump, I just don't like recurves. If you think the design looks cool, pick it up. It's $50-60, not $300+ for a Sebenza or $400+ for a SMF/SnG. ;)

You might be able to find a Caly3 for under $80, or a Manix 2 for $80. Comparing a grip at $70 (average street price) to a Manix 2 at $80, you get a full upgrade with a thicker blade, G-10 handles, and better ergos.

I really like the Bump. The blade shape is a bit difficult to to sharped but it performs great. The handle is very ergonomic and the lock is solid and easy to manipulate.

Like I said, its not actually me picking up the knife, it's the girlfriend  Trust me, I'd love each and every one of those knives. They're just too expensive for our budget atm (don't worry, i'll be picking up a bunch more knives later in the year, though) I like the idea of getting a salt, i have a se tasman and love it.

Price wise? Ladybug Salt. :D

Value wise? You said no Tenacious, but I'm saying it anyways.

Fun wise? Something that is either assisted or flips. (Speed Bump)

The reason I said that is cause I knew I'd get that response and i have one already :p I think i'll save the lady bug for later

The reason I had the idea of a ss endura is for the fact that it would be special and look special. Plus its an endura! So.. not so sure yet, keep suggesting stuff guys ;)

Those SS handles are great for engraving.

What about the Spin?

Unfortunately, their have not been any of the pro-Griptilian persuasion posters yet. For the money, it is a fair choice and popular for reasons other than price.

I note that I generally carry and use knives in the $100 range, not the "cheapies" your looking at:D.

The Manix 2 was mentioned - a fair deal at $80, though a bit big for the blade length and not the most versitile as to grip choices IMO.

Since you don't seem adverse to serrations, have you looked at some of the ZDP and H1 Spyderco offerings. They seem to go for about $60 or so, on the 'bay, anyway, and the designs are solid if you like lockbacks.

I've generally found the Bump's blade shape to be quite useful.
Yes it does have a pronounced recurve, but you'll also notice that edge near the tip of the blade is very straight, almost wharncliffe-ish.

I find that I get the benefits of both the straight edge and deep recurve. You also end up with a long cutting edge for the actual length of the blade.

The handle is very comfortable in multiple grips.

Opening the knife there is zero drag from the locking mechanism.

I carried the Spec Bump version daily along with a Mini Mojo for about a year (too many new knives), and happily switch it in and out of rotation.

I have the aluminum version as well, but have carried it less since they were a bit more difficult to come by.

Just to distract you a bit - Spec Bump and Mini Mojo. The image links to a thread with more pics.

@ josh: Have looked at the spin and I am not too interested, not too fond of the web deal.

@ortho: Hey they aint that cheap =p I usually carry about the same as you. I would get the manix 2, I love it, but its too costly atm and i'll probably get it later in the month. I'll be going to the valley forge gun show in P.A. and see if they have one. I'll need to check ebay for zdp enduras.. may be a good idea.. If Only i could pick up a g10 endura in that price range.

@ knee: That is very interesting. Seems like a very utilitarian shape, but beautiful at the same time.. Those are some great pictures! I'd love to have a SpyKer, best of both worlds, no? Hey :D anyone want to donate a SpyKer to me? It'll go to a good cause :thumbup: *joking*

oh decisions decisions.

Keep em Coming knife knuts
