Kershaw Titanium

Unfortunately I am perfectly aware that more successful you are, more dangerous you are for somebody who is less successful but stiil more powerful, in result you will get for your success not a revard but most likely punishment...

This happens again and again and again, everywhere...

Too bad I thought Kershaw is on the rise... Well at least I got ZDP Leek...

Thanks, Vassili.

Vassili, please don't read too much into my long post from above. I am not affiliated with Kershaw in any way, I just happen to consider Thomas a friend and bug him for more information than I deserve. Kershaw is a GREAT company! I would say they are on the rise, but I already think they are the best! With the new knives on the horizon from Kershaw, the rest of the knife world will soon agree with me.

Vassili, I agree with what you say about success attracting naysayers, but I don't want you to think that what is said here will affect policy at Kershaw.

VG10 would be good. They don't really use it that often, I think maybe as the core of the nakamura, I can't recall....but a nice steel that's not exotic...

Exotic or not, Arty-Marty's spot-on as usual, VG-10 that used to be claimed a Japanese monopoly is the centre layer of the Nakamura, as well as all the Ken Onion kitchen knife blades produced by the Kai (Shun) corporation to which Kershaw belongs.
It would be interesting to hear "some reason" why Vassili doesn't like it... though I'm sure BG-42 may have the better of it, but how many other steels?

I can not say that this is rational dislike, based on intensive testing. My first VG10 knife Little Hiro by Seki Cut had bend its tip. Not break but bend, about 1-2 mm or so almost orthogonal. when was working with soft wood. Knife was replaced etc, but from hat point I am trying to avoid this steel.

Also I remember JapanSteel (who was Hitacy employee) posts about VG10 and that ATS34 has finer granes, better polish (petter edge) and what was reaction on his post.

I like ATS34 and CM 154 better - they feel harder to me, also 110x18MSHD, CPM S30V, CPM S90V, SRS15, ZDP189 - on my opinion VG10 is on the bottom of premium steels.

Thanks, Vassili.

I think it is easier to put in a S30V blade and you have a great Leek. Great steel great Ti frame.... and almost ready to put in production if wanted to.

Yes, but ... do you know of any Ti frames with S30V blades already? You bet you do. A company can do good business following a successful example, but if it sets a new example, it can do better.

Kershaw's current success depends heavily on Ken Onion designs and assisted opening. Why not continue to innovate, to push into new territory?

Exactely, this is just boring. But CPM S90V will be another blast. Even if somebody again will brake tip - there are many "working" knives around but nobody have Titanium+CPM S90V. Important remark - nobody have it YET and after sombody will have it, it will be too late, USSR was able to succed only when they did not copy US development and by so totally lost computer race, but winning in space program.

As I notice it must be someone selfmotivated who usually drive things up, somebody who just making things done, without such a person who dedicated to result nothing will happen. As I understand you call this people winners. And Thomas was such a person. Now Kershaw losing momentum, if not already lost it. Too bad for Kershaw and for us also...

Thanks, Vassili.

yea yea yea!... we could all suggest one super steel after another. bigger and better things, and so on.

but origionally in my first post i had sugested a more common steel for the machining qualities.

the less belts and tools kershaw has to go though, the more they save, the more we save.

... but i still want titanium!

you saying that your not going to buy any of kershaws new knives when they do get released? like the junkyard dog ?

just because we no longer get sneak-preview buzz dosent mean kershaw's lost momentum.

and just because Thomas stopped making appearences here on the forums, dosent mean he no longer works for kershaw anymore and is not still pushing the envelope over there.

If they will not make any knives they will save even more belts and tools, they save money on advertazing and everything else... And then we save more - we will not spend money on their knives... Great suggestion. Let Spyderco "waste" money on supersteels...

Thanks, Vassili.

now your just acting dumb
...lets all try to be R-tards now :jerkit:

free dunce hats for all!!!

 well.... coming back on topic.

i really hope kersaw puts out another titanium gents knife.
i love the minimalist qualities of the zdp leek.

but if they dont pursue this, the sun will still rise in the morning.

drano, I think your suggestion for a more common steel married with Ti is valid. From a production standpoint, 13C26 is pretty close to the maximum when fine blanking blades, thus a savings for all. 154CM, VG10. S30V, etc. all need to be lasered when manufacturing, so there is no real cost advantage to the user in offering these higher end steels vs. the latest super steel.
I'm not sure if a Ti handled folder would ever be regular limited production, as it is challenging, expensive, and on occasion difficult to get in quantity, but like you all we love it as well, so we will see.

I would say that we looked at it like we should be "all in" on a short run exotic project. Price needs to be considered, but as a manufacturer, it is important that we push limits and offer you all up the current best of the best.
We continue to have discussions on the knives of tomorrow, and appreciate all your suggestions.

As an updated point of information, a Ti (Framelock)/ZDP Mini Cyclone has been made, and looks quite nice. With the holidays upon us, production is pretty buried, but hopefully Feb of 07 will bring forth this new short run.

Welcome Back Thomas! Having a good trip?

How about sending that ZDP Cyclone on a passaround?! :D Nah, I am going to buy it anyway!!!

Thomas, almost better than hearing about all the good things coming our way is looking up and seeing your name on a thread. All business aside, we here all hope you and your family are doing well, and that you're on your way to that Exec. VP job we talked about once. I still say we need real knife people and not number crunchers in the top jobs of the major companies. Salute! Joe L.

Welcome back Thomas. Nice to see you here again.

Great news! Will you have full sice Cyclone in ZDP?

Thanks, Vassili.

Good to hear from you again, Thomas! I'm looking forward to the ti Cyclone, whatever the size. Great news.

Thanks for stopping in Thomas. Please tell us as soon as you figure out the MSRP for the ZDP Mini Cyclone. Thanks again.

man, imagine my suprise when i saw my topic back up and wondering what sort of yahoo would have anything important enough to say thats worthy of bumping this topic back from the grave. :p

thanks thomas, im sure i speak for alot of people here when i say:thank you for taking time out to reply and we hope things are getting better and better for you over there at kershaw.

i think you just sold me on the cyclone.
any All-In project is worth having a piece of.
