Looks like another neat Kershaw design.

It looks like the thumb studs are used as stop pins and are right up against the handle in the open and closed positions.
 
i realize it took a year, but ill answer in my opinion, use the flipper thing, the thumb stud does not seem to be designed for use of opening it is very close to the handle and hard to manipulate....at least for my big fingers
