Kershaw VS. Benchmade

Don't own any BM's yet. But may eventually. I own three Kershaw's already and will own more. (At least one more for Christmas.) I have NEVER had a knife so sharp from the factory as these are. Impressive. Love the assisted opening on the Chive and Leek.

But it's all about your preferences. I love the lines of the Kershaws. I don't care for the lines of the BM's (don't like tanto's or those like it). For me, a knife is not just a tool, it can be a thing of beauty (or of ugliness of you have a Becker or Kabar Warthog :D ). So get whatever speaks to you in aesthetics, pricepoint, and quality. If I was looking for a hunter right now, I'd get the Kershaw Deer Hunter in fixed blade or locking folder. Purty!

Benchmade.

Krefcenz made a valid point re: assisted opening knives in some jurisdictions.

My opinion? Assisted opening knives like the ones Kershaw manufactures are not switchblades, i.e., they do not use a button to cause the knife to open. Therefore they should be legal in those jurisdictions where switchblades are forbidden.

The reality--my opinion really doesn't count if a security officer or LEO determines your knife is a switchblade due to the way it opens.

Can you argue this in a court of law? Sure.

Do you want to spend the time and money it takes if it comes to that?

I wouldn't, but that's your call.

These are all good points, maybe check your local China Mart if they sell them then they should be no problem...then of course they could be wrong and if you ask law enforcement you could get answers on both sides of the fence.

But I am the one who brought up the assisted opening so I felt I should address it a little more. No reason not to buy a Kershaw though with or without assisted opening.

These laws on "weapons" aren't the ones you should challenge on a an arrest basis. You never look good and little chance of victory and chances of looseing more rights. JMO

My question would be, does BM make any axis knives with a thin profile like Kershaw's blur, storm, or vapor? All of them seem really fat compared to the blade size.

Yes the BM 530 is 1.8 oz and very thin, with a spear point, very very low profile for the 3 1\4 inch blade and axis lock. I like the 530 so much I bought 2 of them.

i bought a blackout a lil while ago fer $78 looking at some benchmade around the same price they came in blue and red boxes if that helps now looking for another for the collection

Knives
1. Some crappy $10 folder (10yr.)
2. Buck Woodsman 102 ( 12yr.)
3.Kershaw Blackout (16 yr.) bought acually monday LOL

Not including my 6 swiss army pocket knives

Fire Arms

Airsoft Gun Real Gun ???????
Airsoft Gun Knife ???????
I keep choosing the ones on the right

Another thin Benchmade is the Monochome. It is quite similar to the Kershaw Vapor but has a better grade of steel (BM N690 vs. Kershaw AUS6). I don't own the Vapor. My only Kershaw is a CE Scallion that I don't really carry as I just bought it to check out the assisted opening. It is a well made knife but the steel is sub-par (420).

Overall, I would have to vote for Benchmade. Excellent fit, rock solid, innovative , good blade steels, and very functional. You really get what you pay for.

Benchmade - I would put Spydercos first and Benchmade second. Kershaw hasn't done enough in the steel department for me.

In addition to the models listed above, the Benchmade 940 series is quite thin also, and uses the axis lock as well.

But, if this knife is to be used for hunting, meaning gunk, guts, etc. on the blade, you might consider the Monochrome with its open architecture (frame lock). Easier to clean out in the field. Not too expensive either, so not as much of a b*tch if you lose it.

Benchmade just for the better solutions in details and the better finish.

I like the Kershaw collaborations with ken Onion, but I think Benchmade makes better folders overall.
