Kershaw vs Sanrenmu blade steels

I got a Kershaw Cryo given to a few weeks ago. A few days ago I got a Sanrenmu 7071 in the mail from another forum member. I looked them both up. Kershaw has an 8cr13 steel and the Sanrenmu has a 12c27 steel. My uncle says the 12c27 is a Scandi steel and possibly better so I want to ask the forum for opinions. I carry them both because they are both really cool and I always need to cut stuff. The 7071 is a tanto blade too. I never had one before. I use it like a utility knife because of the 2 straight edges. It works real good!

Is Sanrenmu buying European steel for their knives made in China? It's certainly possible.

Since blade geometry and heat treatment vary so much, it seems your best way to determine which is better is to use both knives and observe how they hold up to your use.

Nothing easier to lie about steel type
They all look similar by look
The only real way to know is to get it tested un a lab
One reason I avoid made in china knives

It would not surprise me to discover that Sanrenmu's also use 8cr Chinesium.

Yup
I really doubt they import steel from Europe
Another problem is HT
No way to know if it was HT properly
When buying knives you meed to be able to trust the manufacterer

Let's not starat with pointless bashing. please. Limit yourselves to the topic.
I own 6 SanRenMu and 4 knives in 12c27, thre being Cold Steel

In my experience with them, they both were extremely easy to sharpen, having 8Cr13MoV the lower abrasion resistance and edge holding, while being easier to sharpen with my Smith White Ark. Stone and the Sharpmaker.

The scandi steel takes a keener (finer) edge and its corrosion resistance it's outstanding. Better than AUS8, too

Steel-wiise, my SRM blades behave in a similar way to my Kershaw nura, Byrd Cara Cara 2, Utilitac II, KaBar Piggyback and CS Voyager, but with a bit less edge retention.

I wouldn't trust every Chinese knife manufacturer claiming to use XX steel but SRM is becoming a respected manufacturer and I'm not sure they would misrepresent a steel type intentionally.
I believe that they are a subcontractor for several of the "big" knife companies and I would think that assumes a certain quality on their part.

That being said not everyone HTs the same way (look at Buck with 420) and you could easily get a situation where one makers 8cr is better done than anothers 12...

I don't understand why anybody would think that SRM would lie about using 8cr13mov since they put out that data on every product. It's a decent Chinese budget steel, the only difference being heat treat. SRM are usually 57HRC when the others are 58-60. Sure a slight loss in edge retention, but under normal use I doubt it would even be noticeable unless you were really focused on it in the first place. I haven't seen any indication of SRM being dishonest about materials. I love the hell out of my 7010 and can say I paid 3 times as much for lesser quality name brand knives, IMO. The newer SRM models claiming 12c27 are more expensive which makes sense to me. I would offer shipping both ways to check it out AustoLebiesto but for the same cash I will just get on for myself. I haven't picked up a tanto yet so it's trying 2 new things on this one! I would assume the 12c27 to be a noticeable upgrade.

I always thought the alphabet steels were made to mimic already known such as 440c and were presented as such until called on it by American QC.

Yup. People are fooling themselves if they think a knife of $10-20 made in China actually uses imported steel.

Srm makes good budget knives, their steels are good,I have few of their knives and theyre excellent for price!

Yup SRM makes great yet extremely affordable products. They also make knives for manufacturers such as Spyderco so i personally feel theres not much reason to distrust them

I would love to know where you received this information.
If you could supply a link to this, I would Greatly appreciate it. This might very well change my opinion of one or both companies.

If you cannot supply such, it would probably be in your favor to edit out such info.
(Only in your favor due to it being your reputation about honesty and accuracy on record)

Where do you think the Tenacious, Ambitious etc are made? SRM also makes knives for CRKT etc. Sal Glesser himself said this..

This is correct, and the reason why I haven't owned anything Spyderco in years...

You can't complain about a "Counterfeit issue" while at the same time working with the people that directly and indirectly use what you teach them to make knives you want for a big fat profit while making knives that are "clones"

It's kinda like speaking outta both sides of your mouth.

JR88Fan - I don't recall seeing any evidence that SRM is ripping off Spyderco designs without permission. They can't help if a third party is doing it. I'm sure if they were doing so that Sal would pull the plug on them.

Back on topic though... After picking up the 7071 for myself, I can say that it is different than their regular 8cr steel and I'm very pleased with the quality for the low cost! It doesn't matter if the steel is imported, or if they are making the same recipe, it's a good performer either way.
