Kershaw vs. Spyderco (oops?)

Hello Everyone,

I just got my new Kershaw Skyline from amazon today. I like the knife a lot but then I started doing research. I feel that I may have messed up and just focused on researching Kershaw and not Spyderco. I like the Skyline because of the steel and slimness, I also like the looks of the bald. However I am nervous now (after reading what other people said on forums) to use the Skyline. I wanted something for EDC. I would not use it to heavily, Might cut potatoes, scale fish, open mail...you know, every day stuff. However, I am also a big turkey hunter and upland game hunter and would like to know my knife can handle tasks like cleaning birds (turkeys being the biggest). I am now concerned that maybe I should have gotten something like the Spyderco Persistence. I am not sure. I am completely new to the knife field. Before this knife I just always had a Case three blade pocket knife. Please give this newbie some advice, what can I expect out of my skyline and did I make the right choice or should I have gotten a Persistence. Thanks guys!

The only mistake you made was not buying both! Joking.... sorta... before you know it you will have a dozen different knives and still lust after more.

Use the Kershaw and see if fits your needs. If it falls short try something else. I use most of my knives like you and I have never had a problem with any Kershaw. Or spyderco for that matter.

Enjoy your new knife man.

The skyline should be great for your uses. What did you read that's making you second guess your choice?

Go ahead and use it, it's no safe queen and it will stand up to quite a bit of abuse. :)

My two favorite production companies in the industry. I really don't think you made the wrong choice, and heck, later on, get both. Kershaw has never let me down and I am constantly surprised how much the smaller, seemingly more delicate folders can take. I keep on keepin on with em and they keep asking for more.

No worries.

I am a Spyderco guy but I have 2 Skylines. I find the Kershaws to be very good knives and would never feel under knifed with one nor criticize your choice.

Kershaw is one of my favorite companies and the Skyline is hands down my favorite one handed folder and almost the perfect EDC for that in my regard. Use it, don't regret it. There is a reason why the Skyline is highly regarded. And what did you read about it that was wrong? Only problem I have with my skyline is the thumb studs suck so I have to resort to using the flipper.

The Skyline is an excellent EDC knife. Put it to use and see how it holds up for you. It is thin and light, but it is no slouch.

If you're going to look at Spydercos, I'd suggest skipping the Persistence and looking at the Delica instead. It has a similar sized blade, but it has better steel, fit & finish, and ergonomics.

For me Kershaw and Spyderco will never be a vs. thing... they create harmonious epicness in my life.

No, you're fine. The skyline is a good solid knife, certainly enough for everything you mentioned. I actually like the skyline better than the persistence. I love spyderco, my modern knives are almost exclusively spyderco, but I think the skyline is quite a bit better. Use it well! Enjoy your hunts!

Thanks everyone for the great replies. I really appeciate them. I have heard how the blade is thin and that mean it will be weaker. Basically, just do any Kershaw Skyline vs. Spyderco (insert whatever model) and you will see what I mean about people putting down the Skyline. But as I said, I am very very new to the knife world. I am glad to hear that the Skyline will hold up to the majority of uses. I was just worried when people meant "light duty" that it was made for really light duty like opening boxes, ect. Anyways, I am glad to hear that I can also use it for "light" hunting purposes as well. It would be really nice if they had several strength test on youtube or something, but I cant find any for office AND field work. Again, thank you all.

I'd recommend picking up a fixed blade for hunting purposes. It makes cleaning a lot easier. Look at mora or condor, they make great stuff without putting a strain on your wallet.

umm ive been member here about year and havent heard many negative things about Skyline. Ill have to look and see what ur talking about but I can tell you this there are alot of skyline lovers out there and your never find knife that makes everyone happy

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a skyline. Absolutely the finest full production kershaw makes IMHO. It takes a nicer edge quite easily and holds it well for a knife in that price point. Before I moved to zero tolerance knives I carried a skyline for a year working on a horse farm so the knife got a ton of use. Don't pry with it and you will be fine. I like spyderco knives as well don't get me wrong but the skyline is my absolute favorite knife under 50 dollars.

I actually prefer the Persistence over the Delica. I carried and used mine every day for over a year before my lady gifted me with a G-10/CPM S30V FFG Manix 2. I would have happily carried the P for years longer. Delicas and Enduras aren't my cup of tea. I hate FRN.

Or he could pick up a skyline fixed blade! I gave one to my old man that I recieved from a good friend on here. He used it for deer and small game all last year no problems. Heck, Knottyeagle on here used one to chop a tree down!

Always go with personal experience over "internet talk".
Like many have said, these are both $40ish knives, so don't be afraid to get both and see what you like better.

I'd say the Spyderco Tenacious would be a more direct comparison.
I have both, and I love both knives, but the Skyline has a special place as it's the first "real" knife I got and the one that eventually got me into knives "as a hobby".

But they are different knives.
I guess it's like comparing a Glock 17 to a 1911. They are both legendarily awesome, so try both and see which one you prefer.

Use it and see if you like it first!!! How do you know if it will work for you, or not, if you don't use it?! Kershaw and Spyderco are both great companies that make fantastic blades.

If you are new to the knife game, but you are a big turkey hunter, how did you clean all them birds in the past? For something like that I'd go with what I know. In other words, if you know a particular size and shape that works for cleaning the birds just use that one, or find something similar.

Now go use that Kershaw!

Report back! Take pics if possible! Have fun!
