Kershaw vs. Spyderco (oops?)

I meant to add that I have not ever been turkey hunting before, but I have harvested a fair amount of dove and pheasant. For the dove I usually just slip a finger in and pull their delicious little meat packets (breasts) off. For pheasant I always used to use an old Remington slipjoint. It worked fine for me.

My dad mostly did the work on the Turkey's (this year I am taking that over) and I agree, it wont be needed for doves and quail. I really like the Glock and 1911 analogy. That really put the whole debate in perspective since I own both of those. In the end I will probably get a spyderco as a general heavy duty use but that my only before 10% of my normal tasks, I believe the skyline (after listening to everyone here) will hold up easily to 90% of what I will put it through. Thanks guys!

One of the biggest myths here is that you need a super duper knife to do anything. It's entirely possible that the skyline will outperform 400 dollar customs for the tasks you want to do. I know that's been the case with my moras vs the custom fixed blades I've had.

That Skyline is a super little knife! If you were careful, you could dress out a deer or elk with it, so long as you used a hand axe on the pelvis and sternum.

Thanks to Hollywood, people tend to have this "Rambo" mentality that a knife must be able to do the work of an axe, a saw, a crowbar and a splitting wedge. That's a bunch of crap. Mors Kochanski used to take students way up into northern Canada during winter and they used mainly slip-joints. If you need a saw, use a saw. If you need an axe, get an axe. If you need a knife, grab your Skyline and use it as a knife.

I live on the top of a mountain out in the middle of nowhere - I have black bears and cougars for neighbors. The knife that I am currently carrying is my back-up EDC (my BM 800 is being repaired) and it is a Kershaw Blur. It will do just about anything that I need a knife to do on a daily basis.

If you think that you're gonna need to baton firewood or clear brush around a tree stand, add a small fixed blade because no folder should be used for that. (When I go camping, I'll add an Izula II and one of my fixed blades in the 4-5" blade range. but my EDC still gets the most use even then.)

Spyderco VS Kershaw? They both make an excellent product. I prefer American made stuff and I believe that Kershaw gives you more knife for the money, but I have (and do) own spydies and they are fine knives. You really cannot go wrong with either (so long as you stay away from Kershaw's china made low end line).

Take your Skyline out to play. It's a great little knife.

I no longer use folders as hunting knives....a fixed blade is far easier to keep clean.

I am listening to you all and what I hear is that maybe I should consider a fixed blade for being out in the field. I want a small one that is really tough. I have read good thing s about the kershaw fixed blade skinning knife. I think it's the one just under 3 inches (blade). Does anyone know much about these knives?

Can't help you on the kershaw fixed blade but the Izula 2 is a great little knife. I carry mine a lot when camping. Out of all my knives it's probably split the most kindling. :D

I once field dressed a buck with a small Imperial traditional no longer than 3" and it did the job just find. Not my first choice but I was more than a mile in and had left my hunting knife behind. That buck was sure a lot lighter dragging out once it was dressed. That little slip joint saved my butt that day. That Skyline will serve you fine up to that Turkey and beyond. No bones or pelvises and you'll be fine.
