I dropped my Whirlwind at work the other day. As I pulled it from my pocked, the thumb stud caught on the pocket seam. That was enough to make it slip from my grasp. I made things worse by grabbing at it and knocking it a couple of feet ahead of me. It landed flat on the stud side on a hard ceramic floor, bounced a little and snapped open like it was alive. Suprised the you know what out of me. Fortunately my office is out of the way and no body else was around when it happened. The knife was not damaged and I quickly picked it up and put it away. The knife was definitely closed on the way to the floor as I swear the fall took place in slow motion. I am posting this for whatever interest it may be to the other members. I carry the Whirlwind daily and it has never opened accidentally before or since. I apologize if this topic has been addressed before but I read the forums regularly and have not seen it posted.

By the way, I have been reading the forums for a couple of years but just became a member a few days ago. What a relief it was when I stumbled onto Bladeforums to find that there are several thousand people with the same fascination towards blades that I have. I say relief because the rest of the people at my house (my wife) think that my knife interest is a little bit (well a lot actually) sick.

Hi,Chemist and welcome to BladeForums! We are all one big happy family of knife nuts here.(most of the time, anyway)

I had a similar experience with my Whirlwind but I induced the behavior on purpose after reading about here.If it`s dropped it pops open.I never had mine open in my pocket and wasn`t too concerned about it.

I dropped my Whirlwind on carpet and nothing happened. (I know,

boring as hell.) But, since we're talking about Whirlwinds' ability to open, wanted to state that I decided to use mine as backup, carry left front pocket. So, switched thumb stud to other side of blade. About half the time I try to open it, it just sort of slowly opens just past halfway and stops. Don't know if it is the angle I'm pushing at, probably is more at the blade than up/around, but its no longer dependable. So, guess I'll switch it back and put in drawer.

Bugs

Carry my Whirlwind daily.

Haven't had any problems, but then again I haven't dropped it
