Kershaw / ZT Composite Blade knives

It was a limited run for Snap-On. 25th Anniversary Or something like that. 12" OL blade was 6 1/2" if I remember correctly.

So do you guys consider the SG2 Blur and SG2 JYD a composite ?

We should not be. The two you mentioned are San Mai or clad (one steel sandwiched between another). The knives discussed so far in this thread all use Kai's Composite Blade technology which is two different steels braise welded together.

Here is one JYD clip mod that turned out pretty nice...

This is an older video (2010) but still applies.

Two of my all time favorites.....if I could afford them!

Have them both, and love them.

Of the two in the original post, I'd have to choose the JYD II, for it's larger handle and blade. I love the shape of the Rake, but it just seems a bit too small.

Did KAI have two types of composite blade technologies? One is like what you see on the Kershaw Tilt and JYD SG2 with mostly straight lines separating the two steel types. The other is all of the latter ones with various types of jagged lines, the copper braise line clearly visible and mostly with a "CB" suffix on the model number. On the JYD SG2 I can barely make out the copper line. On the Tilt no such copper line is visible and superficially it does not look as strong.

The JYD SG2 is not CB. It's laminated/clad/san mai whatever you want to called it. Same with the SG2 Blur. There is no copper filler on a JYD SG2. Both my Tilts are DLC coated so I can't see the copper filler either. Is your Tilt coated?

The JYD SG2 was a laminated blade. Think bologna sandwhich, with SG2 in the inside and Sanvick steel on the outside. The grind exposed the inner steel, and as far as I know, there was no copper in between.

On both my JYG SG2 and Tilt I can clearly see a somewhat straight border line and no distinct copper in either.

What you're seeing on the JYD SG2 is simply the grind line that shows where the SG2 is exposed after 410 stainless was ground away. The steel above that line is 410 stainless and steel below is sg2. This blade did not start off as two different pieces of steel that were welded together. The line you see on the Tilt is the filler metal used to braise weld two different pieces of metal together. The line can be straight or patterned as seen on other CB knives.

You're trying to lump together two entirely different things here.

Not an explicit attempt at lumping the different technologies together. Just trying to understand them and their differences.

The "CB" suffix is seemingly reserved for the braised composite blades with a distinct copper border?

I understand the laminated technology behind JYD SG2. It's not the distinct KAI CB technology but you do seem to end up with two steels on the blade with one on the cutting edge and the other spine and all.

So, what exactly is the Tilt then?

Oy vey! Shouldn't be thwt confusing as they are extremely different in every way.
Think of the San Mai/cladding as a taco, the steel that you cut with is the meat. The practice has been around for centuries, and has been done by many companies. Think of the Spyderco Caly3 in ZDP/420J2.
The CB technology is like a high tech jigsaw puzzle, that just cannot be undone. This technology is only done by Kershaw/ZT.

I like the bologna sandwich reference. Make the sandwich... When you grind and sharpen it you end up with the bologna exposed to cut with. That is laminated..... Not Kershaw CB. With that the 2 pieces are stuck together with copper like a puzzle.

As I've said in previous posts...the Tilt has a CB blade. :)
