I got this guy a few weeks ago during KC’s ZT sale. Absolutely love the knife, but - it was impossible to finger flip out of the box. I tortured my poor index finger and tore up the nail real good, but it would just not flip open. Even pulling it by the thumb hole, the detent was still pretty stiff. Once you got it past that first resistance, it was smooth as silk. I never pulled it apart, but I did give it a close inspection to see where the problem might be. I figured maybe it just needs to get worn in a bit to loosen up. After a lot of pulling and snapping closed, there was no improvement.
Then I just happened to notice that the screwdriver blade on my trusty SAK fit nicely in the thumbhole, and just a little twist was enough to pop it past the detent, and quickly close it back with my thumb. It was so little effort and so repeatable, I could basically get hundreds of open-closes in just a few minutes. But I still wasn’t getting very far - after several hundred repeats, I still couldn’t finger-flip it open.
Then I had a revelation - what if I put a little more pressure on the ball in the liner lock? I shaved down a toothpick (again with the file on my trusty SAK), and wedged it between the frame and the liner lock, putting a crapload more pressure on the detent, and hopefully/theoretically wearing it in faster than just its own spring tension. A few hundred open-closes with toothpick inserted, and I finally started seeing some progress. After a few hundred more, it’s finally worn in enough that I can flip it easily as it was intended, but with plenty of tension to keep it closed. And it’s oh so nice!
Why didn’t I just return it? Because I really, really like this knife. It’s one of those knives that I just can’t stop looking at. And I was able to open it one-handed by pinching and pushing the thumbhole between my thumb and index finger, then wrist-flipping it the rest of the way. Now I rather unscientifically got it to exactly where I want it, and I really love it. It could end up taking some pocket time from my Bucks.
