Kershaws in Haunted Places

The site of hangings was the North Gate.... the door the prisoner dropped through before making that last stop.

The most disappointing thing was that they removed the Electric Chair from its original context.

Now finally I want to tell you a story....

The room with the light
100_0504.jpg

The room we were sitting in
100_0507.jpg

This room was the Xray room for the infirmary and Psych Ward. We hit this area at around 3 am which is supposedly the witching hour for this place. On the tour everything was dark, even this room, when we go up at 3 the light and the xray machine were turned on. I thought that was weird... so my wife turns them both off and we go about 20 yards down the hall and settle in for something to happen. We sit there for about 5 minutes and the light flashes on and off quickly. I about crapped myself. One of the guys with us (who has no doubt seen too many ghost hunter shows) says to the ghost "if you want us to leave flip the light on and leave it on". We sit for about 5 more minutes and the light comes on and stays on. One of the guys runs down there and the light and xray machine are both on.

The weird thing is that there is no way someone came down the hall and turned it on and there was no one in that room. Freaking Weird.

Some other minor stuff happened but nothing of that magnitude.

This Prison is about 2 city blocks long and 2 city blocks wide including the 2 yards, they turn out all of the lights and you have the run of 80 percent of this place for 6 hours. That much time in a place that big in the dark takes its toll on you psychologically. I didn't believe in the paranormal before I went. I'm not sure what I believe now. It will likely take me a while to square some of the stuff that happened with reality and good, common sense.

If you ever want to see what you are made of I suggest trying something like this. Odds are at some point you will scream like a little girl. You can't help it...after a bit human nature kicks in b/c you are in a place that is so uncomfortable and so different than anything you have ever experienced.

Wow, sounds like you had a good time. I've been meaning to try something like this for the past couple of years, but between college and work, i never have time:grumpy:. I am hoping to go somewhere this summer, though. Anyways, glad you had some fun and strange experiences, and thanks for the pics!!:D

Edit: When i originally typed this, i forgot to add that i believe that there are things that could be paranormal, mainly because of unexplainable events that occurred at the house i grew up in. Come to find out, someone that lived there before us died in our driveway.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing it with us.

Way back, i visited a friend in Louisiana, he was fairly into all the paranormal stuff and had always bugged me about visiting The Myrtles (supposedly a particularly haunted house.) He figured it would be cool with my photography skills. I have a science background and I've actually taken parapsychology in college, so I was a pretty hard core skeptic. I have to say, like you, I left a bit more open minded.

My friend had the tour guide walk us through and only talk after I gave my impression of a room. Without any foreknowledge of the house I picked out some of the most "active" areas. Even the guide seemed surprised. As I walked through the house I could almost feel resistance in certain areas and perceived big temperature differences in certain spots. It may have all been suggestibility, or me subconsciously picking up on subtle cues from the others, but I was leading the walk through and they were behind me.

Later when we walked around the property I freaked my friend out, because I kept looking over my shoulder at the edge of the woods. I kept having the feeling someone was watching us, and I kept seeing a grey/white shape in the corner of my eye. Whenever I tried to look directly at it, it faded into the woods and I never really managed to focus on it. Of course my friend said that he thought he saw it too, but was afraid I'd think he was crazy if he told me about it. By then it was getting close to sunset and we thought better of staying after dark.

spiral..im seriously considering taking this tour with some friends. Any words of wisdom as far as gear to bring or what to expect?

Get your group together early. I think they suggest 20, any way you slice it it comes out to 500 dollars. Call to book and if you are interested tell them to call you if there are cancellations. We only really got in b/c a group cancelled.

If you want to have a serious good time take a bunch of folks you trust. It is more fun if you all go out together and take your time. We went into a room and went lights out for for about 20-30 minutes. The group dynamic and and the validation that brings makes it even more real.

Take water and snacks in 6 hours you could easily walk several miles....the place is HUGE. I would guess to walk all 4 levels of the cells on both sides I'd guess it is just over a mile. Then there is the yard, the wards, the basement..... HUGE

Use the lobby as home base. It is the only place with lights, rest rooms and seats. We would go about an hour at a time. Hit 2 spots then back for about 20 min to get water and plan the next 2 spots.

Take a camera and a video camera, you will spot stuff later, we picked up weird shadows and stuff later on.

Have fun and have an open mind.

I have a strong background in earth sciences and some psychology. 2 BS degrees and an associates and I strongly believe in the scientific method. I lived in the lab when I was at WVU.... Up untill that point I had not really ever seen anything that I absolutely could not explain.

It was amazing how quickly what happened in that prison became my reality and seemed to stay more real than the outside world for several hours after. I am sure lack of sleep had alot to do with it but it sure was strange.

I see. I thought it would be something that they schedule dates for and you just pick a date and go.

For the night tour it is a 500 dollar group rate only. They do per person day tours and possibly a per person night tour on special occasions. You might just want to call them and see.

alright, i just have to figure out which of my friends will man up an do this with me. Thanks for the info.

Getting people to man up is more of a problem than you would think. The one thing to have them keep in mind is that this is pretty much a once in a lifetime thing. You will never get the chance to get inside a defunct prison with this kind of bad history and this kind of size anywhere else. Let alone get the chance to explore on your own.

Plus, rolling up infront of this massive gothic prison in the middle of the night gets your juices flowin like nothing else.

If none of that works just tell them that Cabelas is 20 minutes up the road in Wheeling. You can take them there after.

Afterthought.....invite some ladies. That will get the fellas in line. Most of the night my wife took point. You'd be suprised at the balls on some chicks.

Some pics with weird artifacts (flares orbs and the like)

Yes the top flare is the window but I can't account for the bottom one... I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation

As I said before there has to be a perfectly reasonable explanation for all of these things.... right?

You know, I don't get why people are afraid of ghosts. If ever I see one, I'll be happy, as it confirms an afterlife.

I used to feel that there was an explanation for these things, until i had some unexplainable events occur at my old house. Such as an old dehumidifier(sp?) that would turn on and off by itself only in the middle of the night when it wasn't plugged in. It was one that only worked if it was plugged in.
We would also have basement doors that were bolted shut open and slam over and over when everyone that was home was upstairs. Now, these things only happened a couple of times in the 18 or so years that i lived there, but it was enough to make me somewhat believe in the paranormal. Thats why i always had a kershaw next to my bed:D, just in case i needed to do some ghostbustin':D

it's good that, when presented with this kind of terror, you didn't run down the hall screaming and thrashing your chive into the empty air at unseen spirits....

... oh, and screaming
"Ghost Light, go back from whence you came!!!!"

they don't like that sort of thing, and would have probably made you eat that chive;)

Truth be known... I believe that when all things pass, there must be some kind of imprint left. I also believe that we can't assume that because we can't see it, it doesn't exist. I stop there.

Ok, my wife and I have had a few things happen... the one we both shared was at an old school house here in Portland that was converted to a pub, hotel and theater. For those of the area, Kennedy School. My wife and I had hardly had more than a drink or so (seriously officer)... and decided to walk around and look at the old place. It was a weekend evening in the summer so many people were outside dining etc, and one of the schools main halls was completely empty. They like to allow local artists to decorate these places so it's kind of nice just to wander around look. this hall had many classrooms that we assumed were available as event rooms to rent. All the doors were closed and it was very quiet near the end of the hall except for one doorway which sounded like there was kind of party or gathering, albiet muffled, but we didn't give it much thought as we passed it until the handle of the door rattled and moved which caught our attention because it was obvious someone was trying to come out. My wife figured she'd help and went to open the door for the person.... but the handle didn't move again and was actualy quite stiff (not loose). My wife just kind of stood there and stared because we both realized after knocking on the door that the room was vacant and locked. That's not the scary part, however.... after some examination and confirming with the front desk... we confirmed that the door didn't lead anywhere. It was mounted on the blank wall, preserved from another part of the school.

we still talk about it today. sent a chill down our spines.... but cool at the same time

What's eerie about the geometric shapes is that they are several different sizes and at what appear to be different distances away from the camera. This becomes even more apparent when blowing up the photos.

Actually, at the core of the more nebulous object below the window reflection is a slightly different geometric shape...

Definitely creepy!

Ray :)

The geometric shape is from the aperture blades. Internal reflections between lens elements.

I kinda figured it was something of that nature. But it didn't always happen. I did get some really clear pics. Oh well, there are tons of other questionable things about the trip. I am trying to get one of the guys that went to load some questionable video to youtube. If we can get that done I'll post it as well. Strange shadowy figures where there should be none.... it looked promising in the little screen on the video cam.

I think the coolest part of all this is that others are sharing their stories. Everyone's got one. If you want to share feel free.
