Keychain carry?

I am surely tempted to get one of those Winston keyknives. I even hacked out a rather poor immitation from a jig saw blade just to see how it would sort of work. I can just see myself getting the sheath snagged on something and having this razor sharp blade poking me from my keyring. Or taking off the sheath, using the blade to save the day, and then going... now where did I put...

I've found that just keeping it loose in my pocket works. David puts an indentation on the handle part that corresponds to a bulge in the sheath and keeps it locked in pretty well. A thong and bead on the end helps in pulling it from the sheath. When I draw mine, I wrap my middle finder around the thong between the bead and the handle and pull. When the blade comes out, my index finger naturally drops to the handle and its positioned perfectly in my hand for cutting. It really works well. I'm thinking of having him make one for me out of some Devin Thomas stainless damascus I have laying around.

Cheers,

Joe

Are any of the SAKs (either brand) with LEDs white, or are they all red? I've got a Classic that I've had for a few years with red one, but switched to a LM Micra and Inova LED since I prefer white light. A white LED SAK keyring would reduce clutter.

White LEDs would require a third and maybe a fourth battery, or electronics to boost the voltage. Much more volume, weight, heat and expense to do more than red. Red has the lowest required voltage because it is the longest and lowest energy wavelength. This translates to the cheapest implimentation.

OK, or you can use 2 lithium cells (3V each instead of 1.5V, and 10 year shelf life instead of 2 or 3.).

Took me a minute to figure out what you were referring to, but thanks for the explanation. That's something I've wondered about for a while.

So...that'd be no then? Thanks.

Bowser,
I think that you may find that the Mouse II is still a very hefty knife which may be too heavy for a keychain. My fave is the Spyderco Ladybug and SAK Mini Champ.

My current favorite is the Victorinox Mini Champ.

I've also carried a LM Micra and SOG CrossCut, both in On/Scene Tactical kydex.

What is your opinion of the SOG CrossCut? I'm looking to replace my aging Micra, and the the SOG caught my eye. Also considering the Squirt S4.

I have both the Crosscut and the Squirt S4. I like the S4 a bit more, but they are both great little tools. I've found the best single keychain tool for me is the Victorinox Midnight Manager or the Midnight mini-champ. A GOOD, small Phillips screwdriver is just about essential if you use alot of electronic gadgets, since many battery covers use a small phillips screw, so little ones can't ingest a potentially lethal button battery. The Vics are magnetized which is helpful. Also let's face it you NEED scissors, and I use the little vic for every thing from trimming my kid's nails to cuttting errant threads on a good tie. They work very well, and having a tiny LED in your hand is very useful. The tweezers in the Crosscut are not very usable, they are way too stiff for splinter plucking. The vic and S4 tweezers are really equivalent. The small blades on either the vic or the S4 can be gotten to scalpel sharp without too much effort, but the Leatherman is a chisel grind, so if you're a lefty, it's much less useful. Prices are pretty even if you shop around.

I actually bought a double sided leather pouch keychain which has worked really well for me, since I can stuff a bunch of small tools and gadgets in it, including an ARC AAA, the S4, and a SOG Crossgrip. The problem with tools attatched to your keys is that your keys get in the way when you need to use the tool, and taking it off a split ring is a royal PIA!

Thanks Matt, it's a toss-up between that and a Spyderco Jester. I need to see both side by side - anyone got any pics?

I bought a few different kydex rigs for my keychain made by eric of on-scene tactical, I have one for a leatherman micra which is great, but my favorite is one for my Spyderco dragonfly. I bought one for my wife also.

I really like the fact that it is very secure, but that with a quick yank, the knife is free of the keys.

Here is a link to his web site, he is great to work with & his prices are reasonable & the quality of workmanship can't be beat.

Morning Gang.

Now I have tried several key rings knives over the years. SAK's to Micra's and somehow all of them have came off my key ring and have gotten lost. I carry a lot of keys and usually use a small key ring to fasten the knife on to my main ( larger ) key ring. Usually, the smaller ring stretched out till it broke.
I fasten the keys to my belt loop using a brass dog clip. They do get knocked around a lot, but because I have a lot of keys its the best way I can figure to carry them.
My favorite knife is the small SAK with a small file and tweezers and toothpick.
You know the kind, to keep the old finger nails sharp !
I bought a cool looking Micra but it was too heavy. ...I ended up giving it to my daughters boyfriend.... I never see him carrying it......That was a waste !

oh and as a side note, I recently joined a gun forum. not too many people are involved in it, You guy gotta know Blade forum ROCKS..

Happy knife huntin

I've got a Atwood prybaby, arc AAA, and leatherman squirt p4 on my key chain it all makes for a usefull tool set.

raptor99, check out Peter's prybaby it's a great tool.

Many years ago my brother gave me a Trim Trio that some company gave to him. Has one small knife blade, a finger nail file, screwdriver/bottle opener. Problem with a knife that looks like a knife and the leatherman tools is just that. They look like weapons of mass destruction. I don't want to pull out my keys and have someone yell,"He's got a knife!!!". There are people that do that. So I just keep the little thin thing on my keyring and it does have the best steel for a knife blade I've come across so far. I do have a "Simon". Looks cute to me, but still looks like a knife.

Hi,

I've recently posted this pic of my keychain goodies (Washburn mini-bowie, Arc-AAA, Leatherman Squirt P4, Atwood PryBaby, tweezers). I really like my Washburn forged mini-bowie and the Atwood PryBaby as a combo... I'm never tempted to pry with my knife!:
