Keyring - Pioneer vs old Soldier

I cringe at the thought of mutilating a Pioneer by "shaving" off the key ring part.:(

hehe if anything ever happens to my SI, my black pioneer is likely to get its wig busted
unless i can find a back up SI before (IF??) that ever happens

I don't cringe nearly as bad as I did from the blister :D ;)

If you're going to be doing the kind of work with your SAK that would give you a blister, then there's a God provided invention and solution, gloves...wear them and leave the backyard modifications of alox knives to the pro's from Dover, like Syph007.

Thanks for the tip!

I didn't have any gloves handy, didn't even have a heavy pocketknife on me so I pulled a brand new Pioneer out of my Victorinox display case and walked out of my store. My solution was fine for a 9 buck wholesale knife 31 years ago. All this highly collectable ALOX stuff is a fairly recent thing driven by collectors that may have never known them for what they once were, really fine work knives.

I had a soldier many years ago and loved the utility. I'm thinking of getting a black Pioneer. Is the keyring useful or does it make the knife uncomfortable to use/carry? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I probably feel a bit more comfortable using and carrying my old Alox Soldier without the keying than my Pioneers with them. But...I prefer to keep the keyring on the Pioneer. If I decide to carry it certain places, I like to tie a lanyard to it, and then the keyring is well worth it.

I do wish that the aluminum extension that holds the keyring were redesigned to stick out a bit less, though. My main concern is the wear on the inside of my cargo pants. I would only carry my Pioneer down in the lower pockets, not the upper R or L front pockets with their more delicate pocket material.

batosai117,

Great comparison pics thanks!

Pioneer and Farmer here. The key ring doesn't bother me really, it's a non-issue.
