I got my parts for my NWG I thought I would save a few dollars and get the shaft without keyways, well,I had a couple of guys I knew at the machine shop that I used to work at ,and knew they would help me out.I called yesterday, and talked to one of them, well the company has cracked down so,that they are not able to do anythings for family and friends. It used to not be that way.Well I talked to the manager, and after talking for a little while, told him what I needed, but also told him I did not want to pay $40.00 to have 2, 3/16'' keyways cut.He told me to call him back on wed,and he could do it then, but also said "You know how slow you have to run a 3/16 endmill'',well that led me to think it would not be cheap.

I say all this to ask, what should I have to pay for those 2 keyways? Without being able to get any favors done,I may just order the other shaft that Tracy offers.
Thanks for listening.

God bless,Keith

Including setup and layout time, that's about a 1 hr job (Could be done in about 1/2 hr, but most shops charge a 1hr minimum). $40 for an hour of shop time is a deal, especially if you figure in the costs for utilities and tooling/machines. Unless you have your own equipment, or you can find a pre-keyed shaft for less, I'd just eat the cost and get it done.

A good deal would be 15-20,resonable20-25.
If you want to mail it to me I'll cut them and mail it back to you, just cover postage.

Bearing service sells 5/8 x 36" fully keywayed for about 25.00. Check with a supplier in your town and can maybe find stock already cut.

I keyed my own keyway in the shaft on my NWG. I just marked the slot, put the bar in a vise and used a dremel cutting wheel to cut the slot, then file a little on the inside to smooth it out. It took maybe 40 minutes for one 2" slot. It doesn't look pretty, but it gets the job done.

I did my own by hand similar to Mike. Looked very rough, but worked fine. Tracy mentions in his instructions that rough is just fine. I don't believe he was selling a keyed shaft then.

Thanks guys.Yea Tracy sells one for $23,which is what I should have got to begin with, well you live and learn.I may try to do it by hand. Thanks Mike and Old Wolf.

God bless,Keith
