Today I finally met a member of the HI forum in person. Alfred Tan and I got together in Tokyo for lunch and then we went to kikufuji, a pretty cool knife shop in Ginza. I posted pics from that same place on the HI forum about a year ago, and many of those same knives were still there.
I am hot for a Saji spear bladed knife they have, but Im too broke from my recent splurges.
Anyway, Bill Gates paid for our lunch at the Century Hyatt and then we had a good time shopping and yakking for a few hours.
He's a nice guy and good company.
I had the unhappy duty of letting him know about Rusty, but he promised to come back to the forum more often and say hello.

Thanks for taking the time to show me around, i had a great time.

I am sorry to hear about the loss to this community.

Hey, Alf

It is funny how things happen.
I have been lurking on your sword page for years and when I saw the name on Danny´s post I thought that it could not be the same person!

Yes, kikufuji was WAY overpriced.
Like, three times the USA prices, but they did have some exquisite pieces.
Didnt they, Alf?

I sure liked that Saji knife.
"oh, its a 7 inch double edged kitchen knife" the shopkeeper says.

Whatever....

Id hate to meet that chef..

Danny, thanks for posting pics. Is it difficult or expensive to get knives you order from outside of Japan through Japanese customs?

no. I have never ordered a knife from outside of japan.
I have ordered kukri farm tools, antique nails that resemble shuriken, double edged letter openers, but never ordered a knife.

Here is Mr. Saji and the spear-bladed knife he makes that I love.

Danny,

I like your answer. I keep telling my coworkers that the Khuks are farm tools, but can be used to butter bread also.:D

Yes that is me, i sort of have a fettish for sharp shinny things :)

There were some really nice knives in that shop but they were super over-priced.

Danny
Was that a knife show where you got a shot of the knife maker?

alf

nah!
I just searched for his name plus the word knife.
also, I tried it in katakana and that gave me even more.

Now that has to be pretty cool meeting a HI forum member in Japan...we always seem to meet in the U.S...that must be a H.I 1st?! Thanks Danny for the pics...on those knives I had talked to Vince when he was working with bladeart.com and also Larry a few years ago about picking up these knives to sell here through bladeart.com I have no clue if they followed through with trying to get them or not...now the odd thing is for my B-day my Mom gave me one of these Higono-kami Sada-koma Aogami-Warikomi(sansou)steel knives, did not know that is what it was till after checking out that site again...I asked her where she got it and of course she said "oh someplace" with a grin...hummmm

here is a quick pic I did with on top of a just started Targe I am making...any translation on this thing?? http://www.ohyasuya.co.jp/aigo/higonokami/list.htm

no, its just a traditional japanese style folding knife.
your hand keeps the blade open by pressing down on the lever.
not as good as a western lockback, but plenty of style...

Those are cool little knives, they cost about $10 to $20 but i did see a really nice one for $700 at the shop Danny took me to.

My guess is that the "ken" is the same ken in kendo - sword. "Sei" may be something like saint or teacher.
Come on Danny, don't leave us hanging.

Oh come on Danny...even *I* can tell the second character is...um...wait a minute...is that the second from the left, top, bottom or right... :footinmou  ;)
