Khuk vs hedge trimmer

kobra works fine.

+ 1 for a Kobra!

I actually purchased a 25inch Kobra to use for trimming and lopping a bushy tree in front of my house.

The tree is about 12 foot high and 18 food around. It produces nectar bearing flowers that do a great job attracting native birds to feed on it, and these are visible from my lounge room.

But it needs to be trimmed regularly and I tried machetes and saws for this but I have found the reach of the 25inch Kobra allows me to prune where required the easiest.

Kronkrew thats a good first step, now you have to carve the bush into a fire hydrant shaped topiary for the dog..

Im sure your kobra is very very sharp. Scythes can cut grass so im not suprised that light stuff can be cut that way. Now i wonder if i should be considering a kobra intead of a light chitlangi. hmmm. I will use if for the occasional tree branch also. How long is your kobra?

I wish we had a direct john henry like comparison between a trimmer and khuck.
I've only seen people using chainsaws on trees. I have very litte experience with them. I take that back I've also seen chainsaw ice sculpturing on tv.

bc molin 25" kobra shouldnt be longer than a machete is it?

If i get a khuk thats too long i wont be able to maneuver it in tight spaces and i'll tire too quickly.

I just realized, trimmers are offset but khukuris put your hands inline with the cut edge.

my kobra is a 20", i also have a 26" bladed collins machete, but it's too big for the small garden & i'm not fond of hitting anything woody with it. i also use a small parang with a 12" blade, it's almost as good as the khuk. use it mostly on weeds. i don't use power tools.

the dogs don't like fire hydrants much, don't have one in the village, blue prefers mailboxes or trees to lift his leg on, millie being a girl, squats, tho she prefers shoving her bum into a bush rather than short grass. blue's favourite target is the telephone pole with the sign on it that warns of a £100 fine for dog fouling. i encourage them to walk past that one without leaving any doggie landmines. i figure pissing on it is OK tho.

the field across the road is growing a crop of barley, the dogs like to go walkies there, but it's now over their heads, they still run thru it like porpoises, their heads coming up every so often as they jump up to get their bearings, i stay on the path around the edge, which is getting a bit overgrown with stinging nettles. i'm thinking of taking the khuk over there to trim them back, but i'd bet the sheeple in the village would get scared of the nutter swinging a bendy sword around & they'd call out the swat team on me. i may need to break down and borrow a friend's riding mower:

Valid point that is not an issue with my usage situation being able to walk around the tree easily.

Blade length is about 20inches and at 34ounces is heavy compared to a machete but it sure is capable of taking out limbs up to 4inches according to its previous owner.

Yeah, being out in the front of the house swinging the Kobra seems to draw more stares than a power trimmer or chain saw would. But not as much as when I used a Hanwei Practical Katana to trim it.

Lucky I live in a small town where I am well known as the pleasant, friendly chap I am... plus I can't outrun a tortoise, so anyone worried would just walk away.

But if I had one of these:

I might be a worry?:D

seems to be a bit of alternate reality thread bleed-thru on the server today. i do vaguely remember some talk of using one of those to trim branches near power lines....ah, well, it's gone now.

A longer blade is faster amd would give me more clearance. I wear gloves but i dont want to get too close and scratch my arms up. What do you tell the sheeple, its a fancy machete from nepal? Or put on a black robe grab a scythe and help me cut the yard?

I've used my 21" GS for hedge trimming. Its on the light side (24oz or less IIRC) and it worked pretty well. Probably not as fast as using electric hedgetrimmers, but the khuk makes up for it by being more fun to use.

Um.. i already said its possible to cut grass with a thin blade.

A person with a cheap sharp scythe blade could beat them standing up. I could beat those guys with my manual push reel mower and cutting that with a a power mower would certainly be faster. That is an example of what I'm not interested in doing.
