Something I've heard several times is the superstition that a drawn khukri should taste blood before being returned to the sheath. Now, that doesn't seem right to me, because the khukri is also a general tool. However, that makes me curious, what superstitions do the Nepalese have about the khukri?

If I had to let my khuk's taste blood everytime I unsheathed them I would be a corpse - a very dry one !!

I have no superstitions when it comes to Khukuris. I just listen to my K and it tells me what it wants.:) And I think it wants to be handled by a girl:eek::p. he he he

I've heard the 'must-taste-blood-if-drawn' thing about other 'traditional' knives too. Probably a way to try to keep people from drawing blades recklessly. I've seen a similar thing for mediaeval Europe, except that the requirement was prayer before resheathing one's sword.

Well, do the Nepalese believe it? I remember reading somewhere on your site that the Royal Kami was going to make a magic knife that supposedly would never dull, so it sounds like they have some superstitions .... any idea what they are?

Oh, and is there any way for me to find out what the inscription on my blade means?

the inscription is probably the devanagari abbrev. for H.I. (Himalayan Imports)

I think it's the Sikhs that have the tradition of having to draw blood after unsheathing their cerimonial swords or daggers.

It sound like an excuse made up by someone to cover their own ineptitude.

"Nope, I meant to do that. The knife has to taste blood before it is resheathed. Now, can you please pass me a bandaid before I pass out"

That's never happened at MY house, nope nosirree!:o :footinmou

There are always those who like to seem (or sound) as expected by foreign tourist...

My superstition about khukuri is, if you buy Nth khukuri, you are to buy N+1th. (In case N is greater than 0)

I have only one superstition when it comes to Khukuris: "If you buy a Khuk from Uncle Bill, it will end up with you buying few couples more". Rusty, Yvsa, Harry ... you knows better than me about this particular supestition ... I guess that's what they called as HIKV!

:D

HIKV = light wallet + strange smile !!

I'm with Bruise on his signature !

straddle the line !!

I heard tell of an ancient superstition.

"If the sharp side of a khukuri hits you in the head it is bad luck."

Who knows, it could be true. You never know with these ancient superstitions.

;)

I'm handicapped here because what many might consider "superstitions" I consider religious considerations -- like the regular Bishwakarma Puja that's done at BirGorkha (latest round just finished last week).

Then there's the superstitions that everyone thinks are silly, until it comes into play -

For example, laughing at black cats, until one crosses your path. Then the superstition comes to mind and you get nervous.

Thats what .22s are for:D

Just kidding, I do not, have not, and will never advocate the random killing of cats. Now the controlled purposeful killing of cats.....
