khukuri a poor chopper ?!

Mohd,

I concur with your assessment. When I said “good chopper” I meant for a machete. It is hard to get away from the binding problem when using a thin blade. If you can cut all the way through your target in one stroke there is no binding problem.

Howard, there is no doubt that a machete can get better penetration than a khukuri because of the thinner blade. The problem however as you noted is the binding and the relative fragility on harder woods. They do however have their place, as do all blades.

As for poor khukuris, this weekend I saw one that could probably be outchopped by a 3" hatchet. It was from India and looked to be stamped out of 1/8" stock but there indendations and fold lines in the steel. No real grinds to speak of, the "edge" was about 2mm wide.

One of those Indian junkers Jim March mentioned in another thread.

If anybody is interested in this I'll match Cliff with his 20 inch AK against anybody with a 3 inch hatchet or a machete of their choice in an hour contest of chopping the same log and we will see who makes the most chips and who goes through the log the most times.

Bill, I had a similar bet once. I will take that bet but allow me to modify the hatchet and add some mechanical assistance. Maybe hook it up on the end of a propeller. I would not take the bet with a machete though.

I have a Sweedish hatchet, very nice, and excellent quality. Unfortunately for it I found H.I. khukuri's soon after I bought it and the hatchet is still virtually new. It will give the CS khukuri is fairly soft and caused the khukuri's to bind. However even then I prefered the khukuri to the hatchet. The H.I. khukuri's easily out perform it.

Never seriously used a machette though so no comment. Mohd's input is vey informative.

Goat,

Newt Livesay said he once imported a lot of similar ones from China. I don't know if he has any left. If not, he might give you his source. (But you might have to buy several crates of them.)

The one in the picture came from a second-hand store.
