Khukuri as a stabbing weapon !!

and that SF guy in Stan.

Uncle Bill,

If you meant to say 'Sten', you warm my heart! I've read those books so often the covers have fallen off. They're the reason I bought my first khuk all those years ago (foolishly NOT from you).

That bit about Ghurkas taking on tigers, armed with their khuks...I have great respect for khukuris as bladed weapons and tools, but taking on a tiger in a blade to claw fight smacks of suicidal tendencies.

So my question is, was that paragraph simply 'hype' by the author, or is there a documented case of ghurkas using khuks to kill tigers in that manner?

From the Khukuri FAQ:

"I have also seen khukuris penetrate Level IIA body armor with a hard thrust, but of course, it couldn't slash itself through--but then neither could a full-size sword."

I'm not sure about tigers but there is a documented case of a Gorkha killing a leopard with his khukuri. Nepali elementary reading texts used to have a story of a fellow in the Terai who killed an attacking tiger with a khukuri but I'm not sure if it's true or simply a parable to show that with bravery and determination anything is possible.

On the old tiger hunts of the Raj the shikars all carried khukuris but I don't know if any tigers were dispatched with them. That would sort of taken the glory away from the great white hunters.
