Khukuri As A Weapon

So now we have it.
There are objects that are made to be weapons and objects that not, but can be used as weapons.Should we get hung up on definitions?A sharp rock was mans first TOOL(knife)and I am sure(knowing human beings like I do)it was also use to split some guys head open(NOW ITS A WEAPON).So my question is;does the definiton or the use make something what is? Or are we getting to deep in it here?Which came first the chicken or the egg?
Was the weapon first or the tool?Need prompts invention. If the need was work then first it was a tool and if there was a need to save life and limb you take the only thing in your hand that may happen to be your tool at the time and use it as a weapon.
Now if battle is certain we would rather have something made to be a weapon.
Does this leave more questions than answers? You tell me.

When I lived in So.Cal. back in 1974+ I was picked up by the local deputy.
Long story about an ex-wife.

Anyhow I was having some threats made toward me by a local bully type so I put an 18" Breakover in the back of my car just in case. I threw a few sockets on the floorboard as well That saved my butt, but not by much. In this case it was enough as I already had enough problems without a weapons charge put on me as well.

WHAT ALMOST caused my butt to be nailed down was the fact that I had tied a piece of latigo leather through the hole in the handle. One of the local Bannng CA leo's picked it up and said,"This ain't gonna cut it at all."
The deputy sheriff told him to leave it alone.
This was one Banning cop I didn't know. I did know one of the sergeants there and that helped as well.
Sgt.Gary Reynolds came down to the jail after I was locked up.
I had no pictures taken or fingerprints and wasn't booked.

The 2 hours I spent in jail were the longest 2 hours of my life.

Sgt.Reynols told me to never ever put a thong on anykind of tool I might be carrying in my car and I would be alright.

In this case the tool became a weapon with the addition of the thong. So please don't put any thongs, fobs or lanyards on
your khukuri's and they
will remain tools.

Weapons regs are so odd that they defy general comment.
Even I can`t see a katana as any other than a weapon design. Yet, they are now used for sport.
All khukuries,by their history are tools. Some are better adapted to weapons application than others.Yet,I would argue their basic tool status.

My Kora, OTOH, might well perform tool functions, in some cases better than a khukuri, while some khukuries might perform some weapons applications better than the kora.

Perhaps the one khukuri most people would look at and see as a general purpose utility knife is the 12" Sirupati. I did until I picked it up and handled it. Then the way it moves frightens me. It is balanced to do things before you've half-thought of doing things, almost to anticipate you.

After reading the book."The Gurkhas',by Byron Farwell, I am also convinced this knife is the greatest fighting knife of the modern era. One example from the book sums it up for me. At the battle of the Sangro ,in Italy, some Gurkhas were working on maps in a deserted house when they heard noises coming from the cellar. The Gurkha officer and his men put down their pencils, drew their Kukris and went downstairs where they found and KILLed 9 Germans. Then they cleaned their kukris, and "picked up their pencils as calmly as if they had interrupted their work for lunch."

Dear Forumites.

Quoted from Ray's posting:
... So my question is; does the definiton or the use make something what is? ...
I guess the best answer to Ray's Q in it's connection to Khukuris can be quoted from FNG's posting:
... All khukuries, by their history are tools. Some are better adapted to weapons application than others ...
Anyhow, it is not always universally true because during a certain time & at a certain place & in certain environment a Khukuri's status might change as best quoted from Yvsa's posting:
... In this case the tool became a weapon with the addition of the thong. So please don't put any thongs, fobs or lanyards on your khukuri's and they will remain tools ...
Furthermore, as quoted from Rusty's posting shows that it's performance in term of it's functionality might confuse people for it's real status:
... Kora, OTOH, might well perform tool functions, in some cases better than a khukuri, while some khukuries might perform some weapons applications better than the kora ...
While as quoted from Ivan's posting shows that our own mind setting might be actually being cheated by what everybody said especially as in the case of Khukuris which I consider as having a dual identity & a dual function:
... After reading the book."The Gurkhas',by Byron Farwell, I am also convinced this knife is the greatest fighting knife of the modern era ...
Then, as quoted from Berkley's posting:
... my 17" Himali sirupati is so light, thin, sharp, pointy and overall mean that I told Uncle Bill when it arrived that I could never get through the "But officer, it's a tool, not a weapon" speech without breaking into laughter ...
I did showed the same but longer one (20") to my village folks and they said it is a very beautiful weird shaped parang (a local machete used to cut grass)!

I guess a status of tool and a status of weapon in Khukuri is actually a mix and a changing status depending on various conditions of time, place, environment, personal mind setting, locally accepted view etc ... etc!

NEPAL HO!

Well, I can tell you the law here. A pistola in your holster is not a weapon. If you draw it, it might be.

I think someone in So. Kal. was beaten with a whole fish in a story I read on TFL or GlockTalk -- under the heading of banning lethal tunas.

My question is: Does puting a thong on your fish make it a weapon?
