Was the date for our Kunventiuon in August ever made firm?
We are trying to decide whether to fly from Phoenix or drive. It looks as though we are going to make it to Reno in any case.
I sure would like to meet with the rest of y'all!!

Can I propose the last weekend in August?

I'd really like to come to this party (if I can raise the cash...) but August is a difficult month; the last weekend's the only time I could be sure of getting away

I am back in Phoenix now, Yvsa, so I've got wheels to get at least four or five people out to Reno, if that affects your decision any.

Actually, I would be glad to provide transportation for/carpool with anyone who lives in AZ or anyone who might find themselves there around the time of the kunvention (in the case of out-of-towners or overseas types).

I wonder how long a drive it is anyway. I would assume that driving would be cheaper than flying, but it could be a close call.

We can be rather flexible this far out. Barb wll have to get her vacation time apprved, but the sooner that can be done the better the chances of her getting it at the proper time.

Dave
Thanks for the offer!! We may just take you up on it. If I remember correctly I think it was around 900 and some odd miles frop Phoenix to Reno.
If I was driveing it with just Barb and me we would have to stop overnight. The other problem I have is having to stop every coupe of hours to ge out and move around to get my back loosened up.

We drove to Springfield Missouri last Saturday too Grizzly Industries. Now They Have A Showroom that would make all of us crazier than we already are!! Wood and Metal working tools up the Ying Yang!! I was really impressed with the quality of their products.
Anyway it was about a 6 hour round trip. We took a break going up and coming back. I did real good with the trip.
If I keep getting better physically like I have bee it shouldn't be long until I will be back like I was 3 years ago. I can live with that.

From the SF Bay Area (or Sacto), a busride is only about $30 tops round trip

. And you can easily get a deal including a room.

I think the date we were guessing at was 25 August thru that sunday or monday.
If we have it on weekdays the hotel prices are very affordable.
My initial attempts at the Atlantis (across the street from HI HQ) got us very high prices. They hear convention and see dollar signs.
I think it might be best to provide a list of hotels and cut your own deal. They always are having special rates. We could then just rent a space at one of 'em for the meetings/discussions/presentations/whatever.
The other thing to consider is security for a meeting space. These places will not supply security.
Lots to figure out yet but if we keep it loose it will probably work out just fine.

Just a thought. How about a convention in the hills or in the desert? I'm not sure what is available around Reno, but a natural setting seems to go with khukuris.

And the hotel management might get upset if we do chopping tests on the furniture.

Well Guys,
I've already blocked in vacation time for the days around the last weekend in August. I've gotta do it that way, cuz I'm the only Weldor on at night where I work. And when I'm not there they have to schedual around me.
Maybe the desert isn't a bad idea for part of the time, but remember, high desert or not, it's dayum hot in the day time. There may be someone in the area around Reno that might let us play on a "corner" of the ranch. Be worth looking into. I don't see a whole lot of people involved in this enterprise.

I'm agreeable to any of these suggestions. The one thing I would like to see happen is that Uncle Bill arrange for his pals with the khukuri collections to have them available. I would really like to see in "real life" the kinds of khuks I've so far only been able to see in photos.

Date sounds good to me. Let's make it firm.

I think leaving hotel accomodations to the individual is the best way to go. We can arrange to reserve a meeting room in a hotel.

Let's make it official then: arrive friday night 25 August. Stay where you can find the best deal, have an "official" meeting on saturday AM and go from there. Wrap it up sunday night?
I want to mention the lack of security again. Any suggestions for those bringing their knives?
I will start sniffing around for a place to have as ground zero that will provide tables or some sort of display area, chairs, refreshments, etc.
How's this sound Uncle Bill?

The weekend of the 25th of August sounds fine to us.

I wouldn't mind a bit of high desert time. Perhaps we could all meet in Rusty's backyard?
That would give his neighbors something to talk about for years to come!!

You don't remember the story I told of giving the last bunch who embarrassed me directions that took them through the funny farm? I almost had them into the parking lot for Lake's Crossing ( the state's criminally insane section ).

And for those who may wonder why I knew where it was, among other things, I took classes there and I visited at least one friend. I also visited friends at the medium security prison, and toured the gas chamber at max with the rest of my parole and probation instructor certification class. ( I quit visiting the prisons after about the 30th revocation hearing I did - too many people remembered me ).

Just remember that at least some of what I tell you is true!

Sure you can trust the government. Ask any Indian.

Security, hmmm. Well a number of the forumites are police officers, right? So how many are coming? That coupled with the fact that most of us will be carrying several large knives and other goodies, gives me the idea that most crooks may stay away. I may be wrong, but maybe not. If anything I'm sure we could store extra valuble things at Bill's. Whatta say Uncie Bill?

A question for anyone familiar with the area -- for those of us considering camping out, what's the nearest campground that you would recommend?

VH, you're right about all the law enforcement help, but it still means someone has to stay with the collection all night, during meals, general down time, etc.
I have been to HI World HQ and Bill really doesn't have the space to store extra pieces nor should we lay that responsibility on him and Yangdu.
Any more ideas and suggestions? Maybe we could rent an extra room just for the knives and one of you guys bring your fiercest chihuaha guard dog or protection parakeet and we'll lock 'em up together.

Right, John, I'm running out of room under the bed.

Let's hear from our security experts.

Write to Reno Chamber of Commerce for info on everything. If you need an address let me know and I'll dig it up and post it.

Firm! August 25, 2000.

John, you are the official organizer. What needs to be dealt with next?

Finding out what everyone wants in the way of meetings, what are the things people want to see, what do they want to hear from you. I think if we set up one formal meeting you can speak and have an open Q&A period so you don't have to answer the same things over and over to each of us.
If there is a way for you to put together all the photos of the trip in one display it would be great.
Anyone interested in giving a martial arts exhibition?
I know knife displays are critical so that has to be sorted out.
Maybe a BBQ or buffet dinner on the last night.
The more open the structure, the better. As long as everyone knows where ground zero is we can make plans as things develop.
Still waiting for those security ideas...
