Khukuri Kunventiuon

Finding out what everyone wants in the way of meetings, what are the things
people want to see, what do they want to hear from you. I think if we set up
one formal meeting you can speak and have an open Q&A period so you don't
have to answer the same things over and over to each of us.

OK. This makes sense to me. Comments guys?

If there is a way for you to put together all the photos of the trip in one
display it would be great.

All 1000 of them?
Anyone interested in giving a martial arts exhibition?

Yes.
I know knife displays are critical so that has to be sorted out.

Ideas and comments?
Maybe a BBQ or buffet dinner on the last night.

Fine by me. All you can eat top notch buffet at the Atlantis is around 15 bucks per head.
The more open the structure, the better.

Right on. We don't want to get hung up with formalities and strict schedules. This should be a fun gathering.

As long as everyone knows where
ground zero is we can make plans as things develop.

We'll have to start a new thread on this soon and get things set in concrete.

Still waiting for those security ideas...

We have plenty of cops who should be able to help. Where are you?

John, you have proven organization skills so we're all depending on you.

Khukuri FAQ

"proven organizational skills"?
Giving me that kind of credit will just get me in trouble. I can't even find my glasses/keys/wallet half the time.
With everyone's help and laid back attitude this gathering will be a real good time.

As to the 1000 photos: It's simple Bill, just put in the good ones.
Ha.

I'm getting real tempted. I can afford the bus ride, it's the school time and the work schedule of the g/f and other stuff.
I wonder if open carry is forbidden.

:
John, you will do fine. Better thee than me.

You turn an Idin loose with something like this and Rusty would look mild. LMRRAO.
I do agree that it shoul be an unstructured laid back sort of an affair.
Hell,I know I would rather set around and shoot the bull more than about anything.

Smoke, take it from an older old man that worked his life away. You only go around once that you can remember and the memories you will have from something like this will be with you for years upon end.
The other B/S you have to put up with will be with you too damned long!!
This is something you might regret for just a while.

Khukuri FAQ

John is the man to organize this thing. We both have experience in the Navy and I know from that experience he's the right choice.

John, there are only 7 bad pix out of the 1000--what now?

Yvsa, very nice post and great advice. Problem is the youngsters don't want to hear the advice of old men like us. I didn't and I suspect you didn't either. It is just part of the deal -- each person has to make his own mistakes.

Khukuri FAQ

Although I have never been in the Navy, I feel like I have my own army. I have found that keeping things simple works the best. I agree with Yvsa sitting around visiting and checking out khukuris - maybe even testing a few sounds like a great idea and lots of fun. I know things have to be organized but sometimes it's good to just let things happen. You were asking about security ideas. If everyone shows their knives after Q&A security won't be needed everyone will be there with their khukuris & everyone can be responsible for their own property. Just a thought.

Alright, it sounds almost like you're saying that we're all putting our stuff in the same space together. No way. I planned on keeping my stuff with me all the time or locked in the car. Its not that I don't trust anyone, I just don't like being away from my goodies that long. By stuff I mean toys, just to clear it up. When I said to keep stuff at Bill's I was talking about the guys with the $1500 antiques, and so on. Sorry Bill, I didn't mean to push anything on you. Just a suggestion. See, the only time I can see our things being in jeopardy is when we have them all in one place. Hotel poeple coming in and out and such. I really think our things will be OK if we just keep them in our rooms or in cars. I also belive that most hotels have safes you can rent. You may have to use an A.K. to make one big enough, but it should work. Once my Machaera gets here I'm going to start practicing on using it in a Kung-fu demonstration. It's not really long enough, but I'm going to see if it will work. If it doesn't, oh well. As for dinner, I'm all for the buffet. I love to eat and I like to be able to eat my fill and not worry about it. I wonder what would happen if we all wore our favorite khuks to the resturant? Either way I bet we would get our choice of the good stuff first!

John and Uncle Bill, if you need any help with security, let me know -- I'm a fully commissioned deputy sheriff. However, I don't think security will be a problem, especially if everyone takes care of their own stuff, as has been suggested.

Thanks for the input everyone. This will give me something to work with. As for security my paranoia stems from the idea of leaving knives in cars in parking lots or stashing them in your room while you're enjoying a few adult beverages or betting the farm. I would personally hate to hear of anyone losing a knife during the 1st Annual Gathering of Khukarati.
Steven, maybe you could post a few common sense tips that may be applicable.
Anyone else interested in giving some martial arts workouts?
And Sandi, thanks for the Reno info. I know everyone will find good deals on rooms. I will try to make ground zero at the Peppermill or Atlantis and that will be the place to meet.

Does anyone have any Gorkha videos that everyone could watch at the convention? As far as security goes, if everyone does watch their own stuff, it should be o.k.. Packing up the Khukuris after each days show and tell would be better than leaving them in the meeting room. There should be some that will gladly baby sit the Khukuris for a little while, while everyone is eating or doing something else.

I would also suggest having Yvsa or one of the other more experienced members do a sharpening session along with a segment on how to properly use the chakma.
