Hey guys (and gals, if any)!

I thought I'd throw a post up over here and check things out a bit.

I, unfortunately, do not own of the HI knives as of yet. I'm looking to change that.

Anyway, for the first (of what seems like will be many)...

What was your first Khuk? What do you WISH was your first Khuk? What would you recommend to someone who is just starting out? (I've seen and been watching for a CAK... that seems to be the favorite.) Let me know!

Thanks!

None will disappoint but the CAK in the 16 to 18" range would be a heck of a good start. Course it all depends what your intended usage will be but doesn't depend much since one will lead to another and another and another.

A villager KLVUK is actually a fine beginning. Not expensive, tough as can be and give you a chance to see what a khuk feels and works like. Not pretty to some, beautiful to most of us but begs to be put to work.

And pick up the pace a bit, looks like your gaining on and just about ready to catch the big turtle or tortoise perhaps, I know it ain't a frog or a toad.....long story.

Everyone seems to gravitate towards the heavy choppers first. It seems that a lot of people think the CAK is the "toughest" knife that HI offers, but I've seen no evidence that suggests it is actually more resilient than a normal tang ang khola or any other HI knife for that matter.

For utility purposes it's hard to beat an AK, but a lot of folks prefer an m43 it seems. if you're interested in something to, say, defend yourself from crackhead looters or ninjas (purely hypothetical situations here), go for a sirupati. If you just want a friggin cool looking knife that's somewhat practical too, get an ak bowie or pen knife. I can't speak for blades I haven't owned yet though...those chainpuris look like they'd be wicked little slashers and those balance knives also look nice.

I suppose it would have been nice had I stated an intended purpose...

This isn't going to be a self defense weapon. I intend to use it as a chopper for clearing and a heavy duty camp blade. Essentially, durability and balance are king.

Thanks for the quick responses, men!

Let us analyze the above post with respect to the often mentioned HIKV virus in it's various strains.

Note the line " I can't speak for blades I haven't owned yet " with heavy emphasis on the "YET". Also note everyone wants a CAK but an AK or a Chainpuri or a Siru or a Bowie add infinitum is just as good.
Mr. CrystalEyes has the virus bad, and Nakago, this is you in the future. I can feel it in my cells.

Aint nothin but time and money keepin my collection at bay. I also collect benchmades, which are in constant competition with HI for my next paycheck. Sortof a david and goliath type situation.

My first khuk was a Gelbu Special by Lachhu . What I wished was my first was a CAK. They were out of stock at the time so I went with GS. Was not disappointed. The GS is awesome and feels so good in the hand.

Could of done a whole lot worse than that. A Kumar WW2 is a great knife. Really good all around blade.

First was a 18" AK, built to do anything. I don't even have a CAK at the moment.

Wish I had gotten the 15" BAS first.

As a first chopper, I would suggest an 18" in AK, CAK, ASTK, Bonecutter, M43, BAS, or WWII, in that order.

Hehehe, I love these threads. It is always so much fun as everyone starts championing their one personal favorite, then suddenly realizes... They love them ALL!

HIKV Level 0- "I, unfortunately, do not own of the HI knives as of yet. I'm looking to change that, what does everyone recommend"
HIKV Level 1- "I Just received my _________, thanks to Yangdu for her incredible customer service. This blade is awesome! Um, What should my next blade be?"
HIKV Level 2- "Dang I keep just missing the DotD, but I am patient, I will get one"
HIKV Level 3- "ARGGGGHHH what shark beat me to the DotD? .... I need to email Auntie and see if she has more"
HIKV Level 4- "HOW many hours is it since Auntie posted the last DotD? Do you think she will post another tonight?"
HIKV Stage 5- The feeling that if a new blade isn't already in the mail at any given point in time, via Auntie's triangle box wormhole shipping then it is too late!
"New" HIKV Stage 6- "Auntie is out for 3 days, NO-O-O-O-O-O!!! How will I survive!!!"

+1 shav-- you forgot the final stage of HIKV--

HIKV stage 7- even though you have more than enough blades you still want more, plus you start doing whatever you can for the company, because you adore auntie, pala, the kami and karda, steve , howard, and steely ; and want to see worthy people succeed wildly. HI infects your brain and you see this place like family.

Shavru just nailed it.... advanced stage 3 into 4 right now! Although I think between 4-5 is the stage where you get all crazy thinking about custom ordering everything (right??) Ha!
Anyways NakA-- people here are all correct,, one leads to 5,,, I hope you have deep pockets. Have you explored the models that do not exist on the website yet??
I started with a CAK and then went straight for the small medium and large bowie family, the IBBB in my opinion is a very useful blade and makes me want an R10.
The smaller HI blades are just as steezy as the big ones :)

Have fun and enjoy the advice from some of the vets around here, they are very helpful and friendly people with some highly radical collections.

Hmmm? What stage am I?

Yep Yep. I need to add

HIKV Stage 7- "My house no longer resembles a home, it now resembles the Best Nepal National Museum of HI."

Stage 7 is currently reserved for Gehazi, NDog and a few of the "old timers" that I have seen references to huge collections but I don't know which they are as they have not been active during the short time since I have been here. If I missed someone submit pictures of your collection and I will be very happy to confer your Stage 7 if you deserve it :D There are some new guys that are off to a good start to achieving this Stage. Bawanna, I am afraid that while you have a beautiful collection with some very special pieces the sheer massive quanitities aren't there yet. I would say quality but not the quanitity, but since we ARE talking HI blades ALL of them have the quality.
