Khukuri Newbie

Nakago1, I would suggest the 16.5" WWII. It was my first HI and is a great, versatile khukuri. It's a great size for all sorts of work and can be carried all day. I've heard many times it was a favorite of Uncle Bill and one he often recommended when someone asked this question. That's a hard endorsement to beat:)

My first kuk was some big honker found in a old Tide box with a bunch of others that ndoghouse says he knows what it is. Beat the crap outta me. BUT! One of these months there's a special sooper-dooper M43 coming to Corn Patch and I'm elated.....but now after seeing that photo of that poor little woman holding that triangle box like she has evidently did soooo many times before.....well, guess I won't ever git to be one of them big time collectors so I best be happy with what I'm getting (and the others I already have) and keep my mouth shut!

Problem, no problem...

My collection has shrunken a bit but I've kept and found some of the best examples of each model.

Nakago1: Sorry man I got sidetracked on a virus and neglected to answer your question as I initially intended. My first Khuk was a 15" Ang Khola by Rajkumar Kami and is a great chopper and a good candidate for what you describe but is only 15" and lacks the reach for clearing like a machete might provide you. Chopping and clearing as I see it are two different end members though. If you want to clear brush and small vines branches brush etc then you may want to think about something lighter, longer, and faster with some reach like 21-25 inches in length and Sirupati, Chitlangi, Kobra etc. comes to mind here.
If you want a chopper then The Chiruwa Ang Khola (CAK) or 18" Ang Khola (AK) would be a great choice. KLVUK if you want a low budget blade with all the quality and function of its shiny brothers. If you want to compromise between the both then there are many options such as M43, WWII, KLVUK, Chitlangi, BAS and then some. My first choice was a 15" AK but if I had to do it all over again I would have chosen an 18" for the added weight needed for more serious chopping and less need for packing or hiking. The better you can narrow down the intended purpose the better these folk can narrow down your choices. Its really hard to select one Khuk for all. Whats great about this forum is you can get deals of the day here for cut rate prices and try out a few pieces for the price of one to help guide you to the perfect knife to suit your needs. For someone just starting out a Chiruwa Ang Khola (CAK) is a great choice if your inclined to do more chopping and camping related chores. You can clear light brush with a CAK if the need arises but you can also chop firewood with a Sirupati or light blade if that need arises as well.

The little woman picture is priceless.

Shavru is right, I'm not even in the also ran category but I have a song in my heart and a smile on my face, the smile would be better if I wasn't missing so many teeth but that's a whole nuther story.

So many knives, so little time.

I can't wait for the M43 to hit Corn Patch. Anxious to hear all about it.

Yeah i want to see that M43 as well. I dont have one believe it or not but it comes very highly recommended! Bawanna! Good to hear from ya! Bookie too! I thought yall were out panning for golden trout!

Thanks for the replies and "inspiration" guys! I've read that Auntie Yangdu is out for a bit, but I'm definitely checking in for the DotD. When a appropriately sized CAK, AK, M43, or WWII pops up, I'll try to wrestle in with the Sharks and grab one!

Does this operate much like the Exchange forums? Do you just post "I'll take it" in the thread and then Auntie reaches out to you, or you to her?

send email then post that you sent email to let other people know you put yourself in the running-- usually whichever email hits auntie first wins ! and sometimes she has a few extra that you can get-- so always email auntie first on the DOTD

Enough is enough, if your wife keep asking how you spent your money and how you react. Feed the mouth or feed your desire!
