Khukuri RUM! You gotta be kidding!

No, I'm not kidding. When I say the khukuri is deeply ingrained in the culture of Nepal I really mean it. Here is a bottle of khukuri rum.

Funny story to go with this. When I was bringing this bottle and three others like it back to the US I stopped in Japan. Going through airport security at Narita these bottles x-rayed as the real thing. Four Japanese security guards were on me in seconds. When they inspected my carry-on and discovered the "khukuris" were bottles of rum they all broke up.

From a distance you cannt tell the difference. I'm surprised the liquor loving Japanese didn't want to buy one off you.

I think the security folks were prepared for the worst. They were very serious and businesslike on initial contact and were keeping a very wary eye on me. Then when they discoveref four bottles of rum rather than khukuris a great sigh of relief and a lot of laughter. Then admiration of the bottles and a couple of questions about them but no offers.

Maybe I have a one-track mind, but I can't help thinking of the broken bottle as improvised weapon. That one has a good handle on it and a shape that's ... if you carefully break off just the tip ... Those security guards were fooled completely, weren't they?
