I can't believe it.

I reported in to my new job this morning. Nice people, somewhat easier work; I can do this. Fiddling with the PC, some kind of folder sharing, not a conventional network like I'm used to. Fire up Internet Explorer and I get a computer apology. Quick look in back and the fear sets in.

"Hey, my PC hasn't got internet access?"

"Nope. The workstations don't. Only that one over there. We all share that."

I go over to the *one* internet access machine. I've never seen a keyboard like that. It requires an ID card with a chip in it to go online....

I'm dead. Go ahead and laugh. No more Deals Of The Day for Ad Astra.

Of course I can order from the HI store, I've done it. But I really like villagers and oddball khuks....

Yangdu, can you please run *some* Deals Of The Day... at night?

Respectfully,

Ad Astra (SOL)

at the very large military installation that cuts my checks, virtually any site that has anything to do with knives or guns is blocked just like any other pornography...guess they are afraid all those pictures of nekkid guns and knives will cause someone to lose control...a further gift from Uncle was the complete banning of virtually any access to any offbase sites that weren't official business...our ID cards have a memory chip that tells your entire life story just about, and also that same card is used to log onto any computer....and, of course, all that is tracked and recorded....seems like everywhere and everyplace is headed that way...makes me think more and more of just chucking it all and going someplace remote to live in poverty while still keeping some dignity.....

That's it exactly, mtngunr... wonder if we're working at the same place?

or one just like it...

Ad Astra :grumpy: :thumbdn:

which will answer yours....do you work at a place with about 25,000 employees? Is it in the SE US?....

I feel your pain, AA. Plus I just found out my plan to leech wi-fi from the nearby apartment complex may go awry, since my department is moving into an area on the other side of the building than I thought. Better view but farther from the sweet, sweet net.

I work for a defense contractor so I understand. The military blocking weapon sites....go figure. You can handle tactical nuke and other NBC goodies, but BY GOD NO KHUKURIS FOR YOU! :grumpy:

Nope to one.

Seriously, I checked my web-based email. Can they record every keystroke? Probably. Should change password. Ick.

How ironic. Don't take electronic freedom for granted, y'all.

Just hope for 802.11g with Speedbooster, A+G or N.

They can with a keylogger, but that is some crazy monitoring. That takes a lot of time and management to oversee. They just probably have a proxy server that blocks sites by keyword.

I would like to see some deals run at night also. Big brother employer is watching us more and more - even at lunch. I'm a little surprised that gun and knife sites aren't banned yet at my worksite.

yes, they can.....do they have the manpower to do so all the time? No....they also can and do put up hidden cameras, but again, something has to raise initial flags for them to do so....but they do random surveys, and so I made it a point to never type anything, send anything or visit anything that could even remotely be used against me while at work....of course, as far as I am concerned, my home computer could have every keystroke regurgitated on the evening news and there wouldn't be anything there I would be embarrassed over, either, because I am basically a boring guy living a boring life with no hobbies apart from guns and knives, but the government takes threats, real or imagined, very seriously, and I would be very circumspect about what I said on Uncle's dime while at work....

Somehow, in a safe place- not at work which may be 'weapons free'; show your boss a HI khuk. Maybe at a picnic or something. Anyway, once he holds one he may catch the fever and insist you go on line to score him one asap.

Where I work, it's not just weapons-free....they search vehicles on entry, sometimes with dogs, also dog patrol the parking areas to sniff out any contraband...and folk have been pulled to base security for a dog alerting on hatchets (the oil, I suppose), hammers (ditto), empty shotgun hulls, spent primers, even a single firecracker in a glove box...every one of those is verboten....90% of the folk where I work would think me a nut if I showed a kukuri to them, and I am including the blue collar folk along with management (which would be a 0% appreciation rate)...if guns or knives are a hobby, then you are a gun nut, knife nut, or both, to most folk.....barbarians! Everyone knows it is "Gun Crank".....

Yup...ya'll noticed my drop in sharking when they *first* set up the blocks too...

Sorta puts us on equal footing with Danny in Japan and others around the world.

Ditto mtngunr's last.

I keep an "emergency box" in my truck, kind of like a hiker's day pack. One of everything you just might need. It's not in there anymore... sensitive training takes place where I'm at and searches are common... don't want that well-worn BAS to get me "detained".

And while I am working with vets & spec. forces, I really don't even feel like bringing up, uhh, my favorite hobby.

Oh, well. There were only about 10 more khuks I really needed...
:p

Ad, that totally su&*s. I hate that kind of mindset. What kind of company has effectively no Internet access?

It will take away some of the fun and spontaneity, but if there is any model you really want and can list the specifics or give similar examples, I will be glad to keep a look out for it and try and shark it for you, and have Yangdu send it to you directly, and then you could just PayPal me or whatever. We could work something out with Yangdu I'm sure.

Of course, the only problem would be if I was looking to get the same model!

Hope it works out for you.

Regards,

Norm

Thanks, Norm. I appreciate it.

So, Nasty- the teeth grow back with time?

Maybe a laptop with wi-fi... hmm.

Don't worry Mike. Uncle Bill always said they find the right home. :) I bet you still score some good ones!

Ouchie, Mike:(
I guess i can't complain. No one in my family's business even knows how to turn on the computer..let alone check up on what I have been lookin at while at "work";) Actually, we only have high speed connections at my office because i convinced my dad and uncle that we HAD to have it. Ya know, for work and networking our two stores (which hasn't happened yet and would make my life MUCH easier). However, that generally means that I can check the forums during the prime times for sharking. Soon I hope to have the same disposable income that I once had when i was living on my own in a crappy apartment (don't all y'all laugh at once, now)...then the sharking will be on;)
Like norm said, if there is anything that you want me to keep an eye out for, just lemme know. Honestly, i'm usually in the first 5 for viewing deals of the day and my busy shedule is pretty much over for the time being. Just keep us posted.
