Hi folks,
Does anyone know how I can have a sheath for my Ang Khola that will have really good retention and hold it even when held upside down? I'm just a little concerned about it falling out. Maybe there is an adjustment that can be made to the sheath, or maybe someone makes a different type of sheath?
Thank,
-Eli

I'm going to pop this over to the Cantina to get some more views.

I usually make my own, Springfield Leather Supply is only a few miles away so that's where I get the supplies. If you want to be able to "lock" the blade in, then kydex or a good leather strap and snap or brass stud will do. My personal preference is just a snug thick leather sheath wet-molded to the blade on a baldric. You can shake the blade out but it would take a bit. Here are some different types of leather sheaths....

I make kydex sheaths for my most often used blades. Depending on the blade, I often have a retention strap which prevents the blade from being drawn.

This is no strap. The thumb tab is enough to keep this Foxy Folly in, even when shaking it upside down.

This is a BAS with the strap right above the "hump," and it doesn't budge

M-43 & Tamang, both have straps that prevent the blade from being drawn, but you can pull it out an inch or 2 due to the gentle curve of the blades/spines

Wow, those are some awesome sheaths. That's exactly the type of sheath I would want for my Ang Khola. Thanks for showing me those, it's good to know that there is a sheath for these that has really good retention, and also is more slim. I do love the sheaths from HI, but admittedly I would feel more secure with something like these. For a long time I've avoided this concern, wanting to be true to the traditional HI sheaths, but it was always in the back of my mind. So ultimately I think I prefer something like these here that you've shown.

You didn't say whether you want to make a sheath or buy a sheath. If you want make your own, the examples shown above are a good start. If you want to have a sheath made for you, there are some excellent leatherworkers that have done lots of work with HI blades, at this link:

If you like the present sheath and are just concerned that it might not be tight enough, there are ways to tighten an existing sheath. The simplest is to glue a thin strip of leather inside the sheath near the opening. Better yet, you can pull out the folded-over leather of the existing sheath and glue a thin strip of leather under it, then fold it back. There's a posting somewhere in the Cantina that goes into more detail about this, but I'm not sure where to find it. Maybe someone else can advise?

I definitely want to try that sheath adjustment you're talking about, because I think if my current sheath was just a bit tighter it'd probably be perfect, and if I still want something tighter than I'll check out the sheaths that these guys make. Thanks alot for the comment.

wow, those are some amazing leather sheaths, I think I definitely will send my Ang Khola over to get one of those sheaths for it. I gave my brother a micro mini Ak bowie, and I think he'd be interested in getting a sheath like that for it too. thanks again.

Definitely some talented leather benders on here, including RockFarm by the looks of it. If you'd like kydex, I can do that, or one of the other kydex sheath makers. I've done quite a few khuks now. Of course for any of those options you'll have to send your blade off for a week or 2, so plan for that

Just a week or two?, I'm just playing, you were going through some trying times with your "kids", glad it all worked out for them.

Seriously though, SG can do really nice Kydex sheath work, for sure. I wear my IBBB kydex sheath almost daily.

Awesome, thanks alot, I'm going to weigh my options and I'll let you know what I decide to do. Both the kydex sheaths and the leather sheaths look great so I'll just think about it for a while. By the way, I was thumpin on my chitlangi and it developed some blade play. The tang moves around inside the wooden handle. I made a post about this a while back but anyways, you guys know what to do about that?

If the blade was reasonably used and not abused, I would contact auntie, and discuss options.

I myself am not as "handy" as many other BF members, so repairing it myself nicely, would be a pretty far stretch of my own poor skills...lol

I suggest that you do a separate post on this question, with as many detailed pictures as you can. Or bump of your earlier post if it has that information. There are a number of things that you can try, ranging from easy to difficult, but it depends on the amount of looseness, the type of tang, and other variables.

Ok, thanks. I went back to my old post about it and read what you all were saying, and I think the best thing to do for now is just tell Yangdu about it and see what she has to say. I just emailed her, I think the first time I tried to tell her about the problem there was a mis-communication, but this time around I was more clear about explaining the problem. I'll let you guys know how it goes, thanks for the replies.

Haha ya Cul I knew you'd call me on that :b for real though, I can't tell you how much I appreciate the understanding. I feel my blood pressure go up just thinking about dealing with all that again.

And ya Crypsis, funny you mentioned the Micro Bowie, I've got one too and wear it every day. It might get a run for it's money from my new antler Bilton though..

Here's my IBBB on the left and Cul's on the right

Good luck with the handle. I don't think I'm handy enough for that kinda thing either. If communication is still an issue, you can try calling Yangdu. You'll probably have to leave a message, but she will call back. Busy lady, as I'm sure you know

FYI...sometimes emails can get a little confusing, if this should happen, maybe calling her on the phone would be more beneficial to clarifying any issues.
