One of the Palmer students who returned from the Nepal outreach trip was sporting a silver khukuri tie clip this morning, Uncle. Is there any way these can be made available to those of us whose work/professions requires the wearing of the Half-Windsor Noose? PLEASE say yes!

I know this might be a little off the beaten path, but who invented the infernal thing we call a "tie" or as Chiro calls it a Half-Windsor noose? I've worn those things for most my professional life and have hated every moment having those things on. I'm glad my current job does'nt require me to wear one and actually allows me to dress down in jeans and a tee shirt.

Yes, we can get them. I got some in years back and gave them away as Christmas presents to valued customers and pals.

Arvind, I agree with you. I have three old ties if I can find them. They are Thai silk and I bought them on one of my journeys to Nepal via Thailand years ago. I can't remember the last time I choked myself with one of them. I had to wear them for 20 years and that's enough for me.

Kaka,

20 years is a long time to wear a tie. And here I thought 7 years of wearing them was a lot. I'm just glad I dont have to wear them. In my old job, I had to wear a suit and tie even though my job involved fixing personal computers and servers. It's hard enough working over an open computer and not having the dust inside of it come out all over your tie and suit. Also, it's even harder when you have to go underneath a desk to hook up a computer with a suit and tie on.

On a another note eventhough I dont wear a suit and tie anymore on the job, I would be interested in one of those khukuri tie-clips myself. I still do wear a suit and tie on certain social and family events and I think having one of those clips on my tie would give me some incentive to actually wear the suit and tie without feeling a bit grouchy about the experience.

Arvind & Bill, I'm with you 100% on the issue of ties. I'm happy to report that, in my experience, more & more workplaces have gone to "business casual" attire. I travel quite a bit & conform to whatever dress code is in place at my clients' offices. Not always having to be in a suit & tie has allowed me to eliminate one complete bag from my travel luggage.

I may be goin' to hell in a bucket, Babe, but at least I'm enjoyin' the ride.

Tio,

"...and on the third day Uncle Bill said, " Let there be tie clips!"

What a novelty! If you get any tie clips in mark me down for one. I'll admit that I've only been wearing a tie regularly for about 3 years, but they don't bother me at all.

I too used to work for a company that mandated wearing ties while working on computer equipment. This was a bad idea because some ties can generate enough static electricity to damage circuits if the tie brushes across the circuit board.

In Malaysia, the generally accepted view is that wearing tie is a symbol of a modern, well educated, intellect, highly calibered, succesfull, belong to high class group, very prestigeous and respected person. I think this view is not only belong to Malaysian but also belong to most people in those under develop or developing countries! So if you visit one of these countries - please make sure you wear your tie! You will be treated as if you are the next elected US president!

True especially in law enforcement circles over here too. I think it was Mas Ayoob who noted that when undercover cops arrive at the station the first thing they do is put on a tie and THEN they clip their departmental ID on.

Of course that doesn't apply where I live, where you only wear a tie to church ( ushers only ), court, or funerals. And cops get called by their first name - which isn't on their name tag.
