I might also try getting a small saw like the Sawvivor. I usually just baton small logs and chop up small logs a few inches in diameter. One poster mentioned using a wood wedge to help in splitting wood and I have never tried that and it seems like a good idea.

+1 to Maniacal Pete :thumbup:. All my outdoor wood work has at it's base a folding saw like the 15" Sven Folding Saw or a folding type like the Kershaw-Bahco. This type makes hiking/camping a breeze. After sawing the ends of the wood flat makes for quick processing. So for this kind of system having an Axe/Hatchet/Tomahawk/Kukri/Bowie/etc. is not so much "which is better" it is which is the one you like to use and are proficient with.
You owe it to yourself to use a saw for the outdoors. It will save you much needed energy.
Note: As long as you're not doing anything major like a log cabin this should work well.
